Chapter 241: Betrayed
He handed her his grade three weapon. They were far too valuable to risk losing. He had no idea what to expect, and he didn’t want to lose his weapons in the process.
Nyx gave a short bow and vanished, blending seamlessly into the shadows.
‘That should be all.’
His preparations were the best he could manage in the short time he had.
He’d given Whiteshade a letter with instructions. If Malakai didn’t return in two days, he was to spread news about the Murkroot Hollow all around the city and deliver the letter to the Sovereign. Of course, he made sure to include that it was all for the his benefit, it would help save his life, and by extension, Whiteshade’s too.
Malakai soon reached the base. He stopped by his room to grab his normal scythe before heading outside, just in time to see Grunde waiting.
“Is little bro ready?” Grunde whispered, trying his best not to make too much noise and be discovered.
Malakai nodded, and they began moving through the forest.
Malakai instantly noticed that Grunde’s steps made far less noise than usual.
‘So he can be quiet when he wants to,’ he thought with irritation.
He almost cursed the man. His running usually made far too much noise. If he could move this quietly, then why had he been torturing them with all that noise before?
He cleared his mind and focused on the matter at hand.
Their journey was uneventful. Malakai and Grunde made their way through the edge of Kaer Thorn and into the Murkroot Hollow, eventually approaching the Gor’Mekhai forest.
Passing the other secret passage, they soon arrived at the lake Malakai had followed Grunde to some nights ago.
“What now?” Malakai asked, as Grunde settled onto a rock.
The big man had been grinning throughout their entire movement. It was obvious he was excited to meet his Luna.
Malakai removed his gaze from the grinning Grunde and focused on the surroundings.
The lake was small, with large boulders and a low cliff surrounding it. Unlike Grunde, he was tense. Grunde might not have seen it, and Malakai had no intention of trying to convince a love struck man, but they were walking into a trap. He knew it. Still, he came.
Malakai focused into the depths of the forest. He could hear the life essence roaring at him, urging him to step into the forest immediately.
Malakai held himself back and waited.
‘We’re being watched.’
His gaze suddenly narrowed. He could feel multiple piercing stares from different directions.
‘We’ve been surrounded.’
His expression turned serious.
“Grund—”
He turned toward Grunde, about to speak, when a figure stepped out from the edge of the clearing.
“Luna!”
Grunde was up on his feet, grinning widely at the Gor’Mekhai approaching with calm steps.
A small frown flickered, then vanished, on Grunde’s face as he saw Lina walking beside her.
“Oh! You brought her…” he said.
“Grunde…” Luna said softly, her sad smile fixed on him.
“Luna, why have you been avoiding Grunde?”
Grunde began moving toward her. “Grunde missed you so much.”
He reached out to grab her, but froze when Luna recoiled, her gaze still soft, but filled with sadness and resolve.
“What did Grunde do wrong? Grunde didn’t betray Luna and her friends, I promise. Here, little bro will clear everything out.”
He turned and gestured toward Malakai, who had been watching silently, eyes calm.
As Luna and Lina turned to him, Malakai instantly felt the difference in their gazes.
Luna’s was probing. Lina’s was outright hostile. If gazes could kill, Lina’s would have done the trick.
“Little bro,” Grunde urged, “tell them Grunde didn’t betray them.”
Malakai’s eyes shifted to the girls. Now that he was closer, he could see their appearances clearly.
Just like before, both sisters had flowing black hair and looked human, mostly. But their skin tones were strange.
Luna appeared older. From her head down to her waist, her skin was tanned and normal. But her legs… her legs were dark and slightly hunched at the knees, more like a beast’s than a human’s.
Lina was a little different. Her upper half was tanned like her sister’s, but her legs looked human, except they were pale white and covered in countless spots.
It was the first time Malakai had seen a Gor’Mekhai this close before, and he couldn’t help it, he was intrigued.
“You’re here to capture us, aren’t you?”
The gazes of the two girls widened at Malakai’s words. They hadn’t expected that.
Before they could say anything, Malakai spoke.
“I can feel it. We’re surrounded.”
“Huh?”
It was Grunde’s turn to be confused. “Capture?”
He hadn’t felt the stares. He had been so focused on Luna that he hadn’t noticed it at all.
“No,” Grunde shook his head, “Luna would never.”
But as he turned, he saw her, Luna, standing still, her eyes filled with tears as she looked at him with an apologetic expression.
“I’m sorry, Grunde.”
Grunde felt as though something inside him had shattered. Something he couldn’t explain. He stared at Luna like he was seeing her for the first time.
“You betrayed Grunde?” he said.
“I’m so sorry, Grunde. It’s the only way—”
“Oh, I’ve had enough of this sister!” Lina snapped, cutting in for the first time.
“Lina—!” Luna tried to stop her, but Lina didn’t let her speak.
“Stop crying, Luna’jekhai! These intruders aren’t worth it.”
She shot Malakai another sharp glare, her eyes colder than ever.
“Now lay down your arms and surrender yourself,” she said. Her voice was cold, but the slight smirk on her face told Malakai she didn’t want him to submit, she wanted him to resist.
‘As expected.’
Malakai circulated his blood and calmed his racing heart. He assessed the situation with a calm that shocked the Gor’Mekhai watching. He understood.
There was no way they would let Grunde leave with knowledge of their settlement. They were here to clean up loose ends.
‘We’re surrounded. I can’t tell their ranks.’
He was still weighing his options when he heard a mutter.
“Luna betrayed Grunde…”
Malakai’s gaze flickered toward him.
‘He’s still in shock.’ He shook his head. Grunde wouldn’t be of any help right now.
But just as he was about to speak again, he felt the air suddenly grow heavy.
“You betrayed Grunde?”
Malakai’s eyes narrowed. Grunde’s voice had risen, and with it came something else.
The sheer killing intent leaking from him.
