Chapter 207: Alley
“Alright, rat,” the man said, cracking his knuckles. “You may have pulled off some sort of miracle in the Red Maw, but this is real life. No regulators. No rules. And death is very real. You need to come out of your fantasies and behave accordingly.”
He took Malakai’s silence as a response and smiled coldly.
“Now, if you’ve gotten all that, let’s start with your clothes. Take ’em off. Let’s see some skin!”
The man burst into laughter, followed by the others around him, laughing and making jokes.
“Hm?”
The large man stopped laughing. He tilted his head, looking at Malakai with interest.
The boy hadn’t done anything. He hadn’t even moved an inch from his position. And from the cold look he was giving him, he could tell Malakai had no intention of listening.
The man sighed, silencing the others.
“Looks like what they say about him is true. Head’s so far up in his ass, he thinks he’s something.”
He shook his head and turned away, waving his arm.
“Get hi—” but his words had barely dropped before a chill gripped his spine.
The large man only had time to glance to the side before a fist slammed into his chin.
‘W-what!?’ He felt his brain rattle in his skull, his vision darkening. He was still trying to make sense of what the hell just happened.
He’d gotten a glimpse of the attacker. No doubt about it, Malakai had just punched him.
‘H-how?’
This was the problem. How? The kid had been standing a distance away, and he hadn’t seen him move.
‘W-when I turned!’ His thoughts snapped into place. Malakai had taken advantage of that slight moment he turned. That brief moment…
The man’s thoughts were still in disbelief as he collapsed, unconscious.
The men around recoiled backward in shock. Eyes wide. Utter disbelief written all over them.
But Malakai didn’t miss a beat.
He flowed in for the next attack, body moving seamlessly. He swept another off his feet, sending a kick to the head that knocked him out instantly.
Malakai taking down the second man snapped the others out of their reverie.
Their eyes narrowed before quickly activating their powers. Flashes of light ignited in the dark alleyways as attacks tore towards Malakai.
But his thoughts moved faster than they could ever imagine.
‘Mostly limbs. No node formed in brains.’
That was good news. News Malakai took full advantage of.
He reached out and felt the vita in the air, mapping out each attack to its barest form.
He moved and shifted, weaving through them with ease before landing crushing blows on each of their chins.
Before any of them could react, they felt their brains rattle and their visions blur. None of them could say a word before they crumpled to the floor with loud thuds, unconscious.
‘I’m getting used to this.’
Malakai’s vita sense was by far his most useful ability. To him, anyway. Without it, he wasn’t sure where he’d be now.
It made predicting opponents’ moves way easier. Back with the army of darkness creatures. Then with the army of men and women in the betting ring. And now, these thugs.
‘It made narrowing the gap easier.’
They each had at least three nodes formed, and Malakai, with only two, had still been able to defeat them so swiftly.
He held back his excitement and walked to the end of the alleyway. He hadn’t killed any of them. He had only knocked them unconscious.
He wasn’t ready to deal with multiple grade two darkness creatures tonight.
‘He’s here.’ Malakai turned towards the alley entrance and waited.
Three silhouettes emerged from the darkness, their steps echoing as they approached.
They stopped a few meters from him, the unconscious bodies of the thugs still between them.
“You’re full of many surprises,” said the man donned in a pure white suit, his face covered by a mask, looking at Malakai with intrigue.
Odd, considering he’d wanted nothing more than to rip him apart piece by piece earlier.
There was no way Malakai could forget this man.
Whiteshade.
And flanking him were two of his guards.
‘Synergy stage evolvers.’
It was a level he couldn’t handle. A level far beyond his current reach.
Whiteshade’s gaze shifted to the cane, discarded off to the side. He took in a deep, shuddering breath, steadying himself.
“Fetch it.”
One of the guards blurred, and the cane landed in Whiteshade’s outstretched hand in an instant.
‘I didn’t see his movements.’
Despite his incredible perception, the man had entered his vita field and exited it, and he hadn’t even caught the movement.
Whiteshade ignored Malakai’s narrowed eyes and dusted the cane like it was a prized possession. To think this rat had dared to discard it…
“The captain?” Whiteshade asked.
“Still partying at the bar,” one of the guards replied.
Whiteshade nodded.
He turned towards Malakai, eyes cold.
“I heard you paid the bills at the club, which means, by some miracle… you’re holding the money.”
Whiteshade casually brushed his cane.
“Five hundred thousand credits. That’s a lot of money for a street rat. And not even a waste like Captain Rhett is stupid enough to trust someone like you with that kind of cash. Which means…”
His voice dropped.
“Either you stole it from him by some miracle, or… you’re not who you say you are.”
Whiteshade spoke with certainty. It was clear he’d given all this a lot of thought.
“My money’s on the latter,” he said, eyes narrowing as he studied Malakai, like he was trying to piece together something that didn’t add up.
“What are you hiding?”
“…”
“Of course,” Whiteshade sighed. He wasn’t surprised by the silence. It was never that easy.
“You see, I think you’re a spy, sent by one of the other clans to find out more about the Red Maw.”
He tilted his head.
“Now, you don’t have to admit that. Not yet. I came here tonight planning to torture and kill you, but you’ve managed to pique my interest. Your fighting skills are remarkable, and you clearly know how to use your head… though you’ve unfortunately met your match.”
A slow, amused breath left him.
“I believe I’ll find a better use for you as my slave.”
