Chapter 334

  1. Flee from the Heroes (70)

#3 Their circumstances: Mirea’s circumstances

“What is he doing?”

“It looks like he is eating something, Captain.”

“I can see that.”

I was observing the instructor from a great distance using a magic tool, but the instructor was just eating something.

“Shouldn’t we help him, Captain?”

“Help who?”

“Your fellow student.”

“Hmmm…”

I adjusted the magic tool to see further and watched as my fellow student was active.

“As expected, he’s doing well.”

My fellow student still has the same personality from the past.

Just like in the past when he would get scolded by the instructor and seniors, he’s now getting scolded by the Demon King.

“Looks like he’ll be fine?”

“It looks like he’s injured?”

“He has potions, so he’ll be okay.”

“Ah, you mean that? But he gets hit before drinking the potion?”

“What idiot would just leave him alone to drink a potion in front of him?”

“Oh… So even with potions, it’s still dangerous?”

“He has to dodge while drinking.”

“Against the Demon King?”

“A hero should be able to do that much, right?”

I sighed at my subordinate who kept asking useless questions.

“Heroes are strong.”

All of my fellow students are strong.

When we trained together, they were stronger than me, and even now, they are people I could lose to if we fought seriously.

The instructor said so too.

In terms of talent alone, the hero is the best.

“The opponent is the Demon King.”

My subordinate doesn’t know this, which is why he keeps insisting we should help the hero.

“It’s the hero’s role to defeat that Demon King.”

“Wouldn’t it be too much?”

“No. He’ll be able to do it.”

The reason why the instructor is watching from over there is because he judged that my fellow student can take down the Demon King himself.

Otherwise, someone like him wouldn’t be relaxing like that.

He would have moved secretly while people watched the fight between the Demon King and hero.

“Still don’t know the instructor?”

“Huh?”

Among the large number of people I brought this time, he was one of the decent ones, which is why I brought him along.

With Senior Rain gone for a bit, the training level has become a mess.

“Let’s retrain later.”

“What? Captain, what do you mean?”

“If I think the training is lacking, you get hit separately.”

“Hit, metal bat-, that legendary!”

Legendary.

With just that one word, their fates were decided.

“Legendary?”

It’s a preposterous story from long, long ago.

They say a hero once saved the world, or a single knight fought an army of 10,000 for 3 days and nights to defend the kingdom before dying a heroic death. Stories like that are called legends.

In other words, this level of incompetence hasn’t even seen a glimpse of the legendary bat!

To send such greenhorns, Princess is really too much.

“You’ll see it later.”

“Captain, what do you mean? Why would I see beatings?”

“Shh!”

Making noise during a mission requiring secrecy.

Seeing the trainee trying to argue with a flushed face, I let out a deep sigh.

“To think our trainees would be at this level….”

“I’m temporary, temporary! I’ll never join here!”

Once they enter Yugrasia, it’s their destined fate to join under me.

Seeing the poor trainee making a fuss without knowing that, I let out a sigh.

“Sigh…”

“Don’t sigh when you want to….”

Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!

The trainee’s words were cut off as loud explosive sounds started ringing out.

“He’s using magic.”

Magic doesn’t work on the Demon King.

Because I’ve fought the Demon King several times, the hero also knows this.

So there must be another intention behind still using it.

“Aha!”

The explosions end and the dust starts settling.

“Is, is that possible?”

The temporary trainee has his mouth wide open and eyes large in surprise.

I wonder why he’s so surprised?

“Why… Why are you looking at me like that? As if you’re thinking ‘He can’t even do that’!”

“Trainee.”

“Reserve trainee!”

Looking at the shouting reserve trainee, I spoke in a serious tone.

“It’s been bothering me for a while… Pick one way of speaking. Don’t mix and match.”

“That’s not important right now, Captain!”

The reserve trainee yelled with teary eyes. Looking at the ‘terrain’ the hero created, he shouted once more.

“The terrain changed in the blink of an eye! Terrain!”

“Question mark.”

“Give me a proper response! Question mark? I’ve never heard someone say question mark out loud!”

“I don’t understand why you’re so surprised….”

“Even after seeing that?”

At best, the ground cracked a bit and some rock pillars shot out from there.

The range is only about 100 meters.

“Yeah. Anyone can do that much, right?”

“They can’t! If anyone could do that, there would be no reason for terrain manipulation to exist as a military subject!”

“Because they have nothing to do?”

“Captain!”

Seeing the flushed trainee yell, I tilted my head.

“Even though my family is a Count house, the military subject shares the empire’s history. Especially, my father is in charge of terrain manipulation at the military academy! And you say because they have nothing to do?”

“If you can do that, there would be no reason for it to exist as a military subject, you said.”

“That’s common sense!”

“Our trainees should be able to do at least that much as a baseline, no?”

“Yes….”

Seeing the trainee’s unbelievable expression, I stood up from my seat.

“Tell the squad leaders nearby. Don’t take your eyes off the instructor. He may use teleportation magic at any moment, so don’t look away from him at all.”

I took out my communication magic tool and relayed to each squad leader to watch the instructor.

(Understood.)

(Confirmed.)

(Roger!)

After hearing the responses of all the squad leaders around me, I drew two daggers from my waist.

“Watch closely. This is the basic thing an Ast Kidnapping Group member should be able to do.”

“Huh?”

“Um… I’m not very good with magic but…”

It’s very difficult to implement magic in my head.

Problems can arise if I don’t accurately imagine the situation.

The most vivid image that comes to my mind is a memory from when I was very young.

The silver rain that destroyed everything.

“Fall! Rain of ice!”

Something huge inside me comes out.

This is why I hate magic.

It feels like something is being taken away from me.

Should I say it feels like I’m taking a loss?

But as the leader, I have to show my authority to exploit these incompetent reserve members.

“Go and smash everything!”

Along with my words, huge chunks of ice start falling from the sky.

Of course it’s not the magical bombing that the Imperial Army boasts of.

The ice used in magical bombings is ice created according to the laws of nature.

On the other hand, the rain of ice I created is just something twisted from the principles of the world through the medium of magic power.

Something like that wouldn’t inflict any damage on the Demon King.

But,

“See, terrain can change easily, right?”

“…I think the hero’s condition might change more easily than the terrain? From alive to dead!”

“It’s okay. he won’t die from this much.”

“The hero is in the terrain changing attack, Captain?”

It’s alright.

He was a hero who endured even real imperial magical bombings when I was younger.

He won’t succumb to magic like this.

“The Demon King is completely fine while the hero is desperately evading, Captain!”

“That’s what I was aiming for.”

When the sudden event startles and confuses the Demon King,

“Oh darkness.”

I summon one of my contracted summons, a spirit of darkness, and cast magic on the shadows of the falling ice.

“Shadow steps!”

A movement spell that connects darkness to darkness.

Using that, I instantly got behind the Demon King and tried to stab my dagger into his body, but!

“Guh!”

“Tch!”

I aimed for his neck but the quick-witted Demon King dodged, so I could only inflict a long wound on his body.

I was really disappointed.

“You wench!”

The Demon King, gritting his teeth, raised his sword and started charging at me.

“I’ll kill you first, you annoying wench!”

“Not yet…”

I blocked the thrusting sword with my two daggers, but,

“It hurts…”

I felt my wrists give out from the single strike.

“Mire…a?”

While I was making a pained expression and grabbing my hurt wrist, the hero with blood flowing down his face looked at me with an expression of having survived.

You’re losing a lot of blood.

“Did the Demon King hit you?”

“Ah, this wound is because of some crazy people’s magic just now…”

Hmm… Come to think of it, it doesn’t seem to be flowing that much.

“Reinforcements?”

“Just me.”

“What? No imperial troops?”

“The others have to watch the instructor.”

“The Demon King is more important right now!”

“Our goal is always the instructor.”

Even as I chatted with the hero, the Demon King did not cease his attacks.

Wielding his sword and spewing black energy, the Demon King was truly the embodiment of evil.

He looks like an undefeatable existence, but there were still ways.

“What if chunks of ice start falling again? Do you think you could survive?”

“No, I’d die for sure.”

I casually brought it up but my comrade frowned.

My comrade has become too weak.

Seeing my numbed comrade, my heart aches and I softly sigh.

“Then… You’d die for sure.”

“Hey!”

“What are you babbling about!”

“Ack!”

Clang!

The hero lets out a scream and goes flying.

“Are you okay?”

Having moved in advance using the spirit of darkness to where the hero would fly, I throw a small recovery potion to the hero while saying,

“Back when I was taking the test to become the Ast Kidnapping Group’s leader, something like this happened…”

“That’s too sudden a past story! Is it necessary for fighting the Demon King?”

“Yeah. So listen.”

While watching the Demon King charge, I quickly talked about what happened in the past.

“The problem had this. If the enemy enters the forest and repeats escape and ambush, what would you do?”

“What’s that?”

The test for the position of Ast Kidnapping Group leader, with a high salary and various benefits.

For the one-on-one interview question with Her Highness, the Princess, I answered like this.

“First, burn down the area where the enemy is. Second, they all die when the forest becomes a sea of fire!”

“As expected, it wasn’t a proper organization! To become a leader with that!”

My comrade is misunderstanding.

The Ast Kidnapping Group isn’t such an incompetent organization.

“No way. Anyone would think of that much. After that was third, detecting the magic power reactions of enemy mages trying to extinguish the fire, and fourth…”

“Hey, wait a minute. Am I the only one feeling uneasy about this?”

I felt like something was off, but it was already too late.

(Captain Mirea, have you arrived at the target location? Are you still there?)

It was the voice of the mage leader coming from the communication magic tool.

“Ah…”

The face of my comrade turned pale white upon hearing the voice of Leader Legas the bully.

“Oh no, this crazy b*tch!”

To be cursed at by my fellow student is so saddening.

But he’s the only companion I have left! I came all the way here to save him from getting beaten up!

“Yes, Captain. Is there an area nearby where the terrain has changed unnaturally? Please rain down some hail there.”

(Understood.)

“Ah, no!”

The hero who dodged the Demon King’s attack immediately turns his back and starts running away.

“You bastard!”

The enraged Demon King chases after him, but the hero doesn’t look back and keeps on running.

“The so-called hero is running away again!”

“If I stay here I’ll be killed for sure!”

To think just some rain could kill him.

My comrade has become weak indeed.

Back when we were with the Instructor, he would have overcome this much without any trouble.

“Sigh…”

Swin and Sia have adapted too much to the outside world as well.

“What a shame.”

There are many good things outside.

The food is delicious, and there are many things to enjoy.

But there are annoying things as well.

Annoying people who cling to you at noble gatherings, or those who nitpick etiquette at meals when you just want to eat.

Sometimes I’d rather be fighting like this than dealing with those annoying things.

“Huff… huff…”

I take a deep breath.

My goal is the Demon King’s neck.

This time I’m determined to serve it.

Boom!

The crashing sound of falling ice.

While the Demon King is taken aback, assuming it’s the same magic as before, another chunk of ice falls right above his head – that was my aim.

“This crazy b*tch!”

Sensing the instant shadow of the ice, he uses magic. Seeing me swinging my dagger at him, the Demon King seems flustered.

“As her imperial Highness said, I have much talent in dancing.”

“What nonsense is this?”

The Demon King, no, senior, glares at me through gritted teeth while keeping an eye on the falling ice and me.

“You said evasive footwork is similar to dance steps. So… care to dance with me, senior?”

“You bitch!”

Boom!

The falling ice and the demon king’s sword strikes.

Avoiding them, I move my feet while maintaining a bright smile.

“A dance of death, lasting until senior’s demise.”

Listening to the familiar sound of rain from my very early childhood, I begin to dance with my senior.
