Alex looked toward the guards with a quick glance and then looked down at the paper. He picked up another sweet and ate it, while thinking about how sneakily the young girl had managed to give this paper to him.

Alex kept the rest of the sweets and walked back into the hole where they would not see what he was going to do with the sweets.

Inside, Alex took the sweets out of the paper and opened it wide to read what was written inside.

As Alex began reading it, he only just realized that it was written in the Demon’s language. It was the same language used back in the 3rd Major Spirit realm. Every other Immortal world he had been to used the Human language.

While speaking or using talismans, the written language rarely mattered since it was all the same, but in text, that was different.

‘So many demons, and they use the Demon’s language as well,’ Alex thought. ‘It couldn’t have been something they naturally learned at all, so how did they get it?’

The people of this world lived far too young a life to have the same language be used for thousands of years afterward. So, Alex could only believe that something else he did not understand was happening here.

He ignored his curiosity regarding the language’s history and focused on what was actually written. Looking through it, it read like a letter, and it started with his name.

Alex, how have you been? If my daughter has done as I have asked, then you should have received my message.

Alex had guessed this message had to be from Xichen, but he was still surprised. The young girl hadn’t just given this to him on her own. It appeared Xichen had planned it all.

I’m sorry, the letter continued, I haven’t had the chance to come meet you. Ever since the Stoneclaws died to Death, things have grown chaotic. For fear of my life, my father hired guards to protect me, while making it clear that I could never go to visit you.

I have tried to persuade Father into letting you out, but he seems to have made up his mind. For as long as he is the chief, he will make sure you are imprisoned, and I cannot do anything to change that, I’m afraid.

You have told me you are an Immortal, so I know you can survive for a long time, but it still must be difficult for you. I will try to get you out as soon as I can, but I fear I can only wait until my father passes down the title of chief to me.

I know you hate my father for what he has done to you, but I hope when I find a way to let you out, you won’t hold a grudge against him. I know it is a stupid thing to ask, but I still must.

It is a dangerous time around the city too. The Sandkillers have joined us, but the Skullheads have gone over to support the Grayhounds. We both now have backings from two groups, both of which want us to go after the Stoneclaws.

Things have died down for a while now. We are no longer attacking each other by planting Sun Wraiths in their cities. After enough times, we have come to realize that it is only bad for the both of us.

We can’t control the Sun Wraiths, and they have wrecked all of our cities. Many people have died already. I pray no more will die.

You’ve already met my daughter, so I’m sure you’ve figured out that I got married. After the first time the Sun Wraiths attacked, my father hired an Extolite to guard me. We fell in love not long after, and I decided to marry him.

I never got the time to become an Extolite myself until now, but once everything settles, I’m sure I’ll get the chance to. It won’t be too long, I hope.

Once I become an Extolite, I should have more say in matters of the tribe. Maybe, I will get a chance to get you out as well.

So try your best to wait for a couple more years. I will get you out.

Until then, I’ll send my daughter to keep you company. My father has say over what I can and cannot do within the city, but my daughter has more freedom since she can just complain to her father.

I hope you won’t be lonely that way.

The letter ended.

Alex remained silent for a while, taking in the information he had received.

He knew things weren’t good in Palm Haven, but the way the letter talked about it, it all seemed too volatile. Two groups ready to battle it out for the land and resources of a single tribe.

And judging from the building tension, this was going to explode soon enough. The entire city would fall into a massive battle. How long would that take?

Alex didn’t want to spend any more time in this place than he needed to, but it seemed he must.

He read through the letter one more time, reaching the point where Xichen made him promise that he wouldn’t attack her father.

Truth was, his grudge against the man went far beyond their friendship. Alex hated the man way more than he cared anything about Xichen. When he left, he was going to kill that man.

He only wondered if he should let Xichen know this or not.

As badly as he wanted to kill the man, he didn’t want anyone to feel like they were the reason for it. If Xichen were to release him, and he were to then kill the chief, she would feel guilt over it forever.

She would be no different than the person who killed her father.

Alex considered letting her know, but he couldn’t afford to care about the others. At this point, he had to think about himself first.

So one way or another, he was going to get out of this place as soon as he could.
