A large boom resounded over the battlefield.
General Feng’s spear sank into the neck of the 3rd-tier Profound Grade ant which wasn’t subdued by the stink pill.
“See? There was no need to worry, Yi’er”, Wu Long smiled. looking at that scene, as Feng Yi sighed with relief at his side.
“It’s still nerve-wracking…”, she replied with a weak smile, “That’s still a 3rd-tier Profound Grade Beast…”
“Demonic Beasts can indeed be just as tricky as humans in case you don’t know their characteristics, or if their abilities pose a specific challenge, but these ants are neither of those”, Wu Long explained with a smile, turning to her and raising his hand to gently caress her cheek, “Rather, they are less powerful individually and would normally considered lower tier or even tier and a half than their cultivation in terms of power. They are only a threat because of their numbers”
Feng Yi looked up into his eyes, soothed by his voice and the gentle sensation of his fingers, as well as his words, finally understanding the strange feeling she got as they were planning out the defense, “Is that why even the soldiers, as long as they fight in a group can take down a 2nd-tier ant without using the stink pill, and a 3rd-tier with a stink pill?”
After all, 3rd-tier Profound Grade in Demonic Beasts was roughly equivalent to Essence Ignition Realm, and the difference between Essence Gathering and Essence Ignition Realms was so immense, it was hardly believable that these soldiers could bridge the gap from Essence Awakening Realm simply with coordinated group effort.
Indeed, other 3rd-tier Profound Grade Demonic Beasts were, at least until some time ago, a good challenge even for Wu Long.
Wu Long nodded, “Yes, so now that General Feng has advanced to Essence Gathering Realm, he is more than a match for one. Though he would still struggle against high-level 3rd-tier ones, and the only way for him to defeat a low-level 4th-tier one is to use the stink pill, at least for now”
Feng Yi smiled, reassured by his words, and confidence with which he said them, leaning to rest her head against his chest as he tightly embraced her.

The first three attempts at refining the Heaven Turning Pill failed, much to Yu Huan’s frustration and embarrassment at wasting precious ingredients.
She knew, that there was no such thing as an Alchemist who never failed refining a pill. On top of that, she was refining pills that would normally require a far higher cultivation, and even with sufficient cultivation, were a hard pill to refine due to complicated process and skill requirements.
But that still didn’t make her feel any better, since such rational analysis had to contend with raw emotions.
However, despite that, Wu Long did not meddle or go soothe her at that moment, showing her his full trust, and the confidence in her success. To her, it was like saying he was not at all worried or suspecting she might fail.
This soothed her more than any words of comfort or encouragement. He simply did not give this temporary setback any meaning, which took away its power. It was just that, a small setback. My Virtual Library Empire (M V L E M P Y R) appreciates your readership at the source.
At the same time, Yu Huan knew, not only instinctively, but because Wu Long told her from time to time, that he was there if she needed his support and comfort, and that he was there for her no matter what.
And like a miracle, he was there whenever she truly wanted his comfort, even if she have not yet expressed it.
She steeled her resolve, and soon began a fourth attempt.

They were making decent progress with the outside walls, and expanding the Grand Formation in the next three days and nights.
The armies of ants became too large to see in their entirety, stretching out to the horizons in every direction, and no amount they defeated seemed to matter to the number that appeared.
Though the vast majority were, as usual, Mortal Grade. A fact that would not change even as time passed.
But as the sun was setting on the fifth day of the expedition, the first 4th-tier Demonic Beast ant appeared, approaching the fortress with incredible speed while trampling lower-tier ants.
Wu Long made sure the stronghold detected and made an adequate response to this threat, as the firework with the stink pill hit the ant in the head as soon as it entered the range, stopping it quite some distance away from the expanded frontline.
“Now then, since they succeeded in neutralizing it, it’s not considered meddling… besides the Grand Formation’s not ready yet for the Killing Array so it’ll be a nuisance for that one to become stuck in the vicinity, even if it’ll remain there”, Wu Long said, as the ladies standing near him smiled, thinking he was tired of simply controlling the situation, doing nothing, and was searching for an excuse to act.
However, his next words caused surprise to appear on the faces of the ladies, “Cui’er, would you like to take it down?”
“Eh?”, Gong Liwei widened her eyes, hearing this offer to her little sister.
The latter, however, showed excitement, almost jumping as her eyes glistened, “Can I?”
“Mm, I’ve asked you to stay back for quite some time, it must’ve been quite frustrating to not be able to see the results of your training for so long”, Wu Long nodded with a grin, “It’ll also give you a better handle on your current level”
“Yay!!!”, she jumped into his embrace, hugging him with excitement, and then hurriedly went forward.
Gong Cui’s Zither appeared in front of her, as she sat down, facing the battlefield, and the 4th-tier Profound Grade ant in the distance.
Her delicate fingers hovered over the strings, slightly trembling from excitement, as she took a deep breath with closed eyes to contain it.
As her eyes opened, her aura slightly changed, becoming calmer, more focused. Her fingers touched the strings, and a progression of seven notes resounded.
The sound reached the ears of everyone around, but as it traveled forward, it seemed to gain power, forming a visible wave that gained more and more momentum.
And then, they could see seven waves impacting each other from behind in sequence, merging and compounding until a giant wave started devastating the army of the ants, ripping them to shreds, still expanding in size and power.
The beauties watched with wide eyes, as the wave annihilated anything alive on its path, until it reached the targeted 4th-tier Profound Grade Ant.
However, while it took severe damage, the ant was merely pushed back, with some of its plates cracked.
Gong Cui also looked with a surprised look. She clearly didn’t anticipate for this army of ants to be so ‘weak’.
However, as soon as she saw her main target survive the attack, her hands gracefully moved to pinch two strings, and then a third one.
This time, the attack she sent was small, and by the time it became visible in the dust that rose, it resembled a cone.
It was also much faster, as only Wu Long, and a handful of his beauties saw it shoot off at all.
A moment, and half the ant’s head disappeared, leaving a clear circular opening.
“I did it!”, Gong Cui stood up with both hands raised in an energetic, triumphant pose, and turning to Wu Long, leapt into his embrace again with a laugh.
“Mm, you did great, Cui’er, no, even better than great, you did amazing”, he chuckled, patting her head as she was in his embrace, while the beaties around, aside from Ye Ling, Xue Bing and Madam Liang, were still frozen in shock.
Even the usually aloof Lian Zhiqiu showed astonishment, though she expected it to an extent, and thus was the first to calm down.
“Ehehehe… hmm, although it’s strange… I knew it was powerful, so I didn’t hold back. But still, the response is…”, Gong Cui laughed slightly bashfully at the praise, and then, putting her index finger on her lip and slightly tilting her head in a cute pondering gesture, noted that there was a strange sensation when she made both attacks.
Her words, however, made the ladies of the Dao Family sigh in relief, since it meant that the two attacks Gong Cui used, were all-out strikes, just of different properties, which meant they took almost half of her Spiritual Qi reserves to unleash, and weren’t just minor attacks she could shoot off without restraint.
It was a common trait with Gong Cui, as she tended to make an all-out attack, which was incredibly powerful, but drained her resources.
It was also why Wu Long wanted for her to try out her current powers in this setting where she could compare results of her attacks with the fighting the Sect has been doing.
“Mm, your skills in using Music Dao rose significantly, so it doesn’t take as much as it used to, to produce greater results”, he explained to Gong Cui, “In other words, you underestimated the strength of your attacks, which is why you had that strange sensation, as if your attacks hit nothing”
“Eh? So you mean… I didn’t need to use that much?”, she widened her eyes.
“Mm, you wouldn’t need that much power for the wide-area attack for this army, you could’ve achieved similar results with a third of the power you used in the first attack”, he nodded, “As for the second attack, you could’ve used one tenth or even less of the power you used and still killed it on the first try, even less if you aimed for a weak spot like the thin neck instead of the relatively tough head”
“I see… can I try more?”, she then asked, as she wanted now to gauge how much power was needed to not uselessly waste Spiritual Qi.
“Of course, Cui’er. Go ahead and test as much as you need”, he planted a kiss on her forehead, causing her to make a blissful smile, with rosy cheeks, and then excitedly return to her Zither.
She started testing the power of her attacks, starting from the weakest which still obliterated most Mortal Grade ants with ease, and gradually adjusting her perception of using her abilities, and gradually learning to save her fighting potential, adjusting the power to meet the targets.
This was also, an indirect sign for his ladies to participate if they wanted to as well, since the primary operation pattern of the fortress was already confirmed.
They chose a direction, and started testing out their current skills as well, along with using various tricks, and cooperation tactics they came up with in battle to test if they were effective, as this was an excellent live testing ground.
—
“Success!!!”, Yu Huan turned toward Wu Long, who just entered her Alchemy chamber in this fortress.
“Congratulations, Huan’er. And thank you”, he smiled, coming closer to hug her, and give her a kiss, as she weaved her hands around his neck.
With this, the Heaven Turning Pill promised to the Ember Palm Pavilion’s Inner Court Elder was now ready. Now, they just had to wait until the fortress was completely operational against 4th and 5th-tier Profound Grade ants, for this expedition to become a success.
