Chapter 340: Alrisa Velmourn

“Are you leaving already?”

Lavinia questioned with a playful smile on her face.

“…you are really enjoying this, aren’t you?”

Kael snorted, not liking how the Princess was sitting leisurely while he had to go work.

“Shouldn’t you be reading the report Aelindra gave you?”

He questioned, wanting Lavinia to do something as well. The Princess, however, just shrugged at those words and—

“Already did it when you were bathing.”

She answered smugly.

Clearly, the Princess was enjoying teasing the Hero as well.

“A-Already…?”

Kael blinked. He had seen the report, there were quite a few pages.

“Yes.”

Lavinia answered confidently, and for a moment, Kael turned silent. He hadn’t forgotten how ridiculously intelligent the woman was.

In the end, the only thing he could do was snort and turn away.

“I will be leaving then.”

“Work hard.”

Lavinia smiled as she waved him goodbye.

“You too, you still need to work for 4 hours. Don’t forget.”

“Yes yes, now go, you will be late.”

Lavinia’s smile didn’t fade, and as if adding more salt to his injuries,

“I also need to visit the Provision Hall later to submit my schedule. I am thinking of taking classes in the afternoon. That way, I could sleep in the morning if I feel like it.”

“…whatever.”

In the end, Kael just walked out in defeat.

Lavinia watched him leave with a light smile; teasing him was indeed fun. Once he left, the Princess then stretched her body and turned towards her Spirits.

“Shall we begin our practice?”

“Kriiii!!!”

The Spirits nodded, some jumping in excitement.

Just like that, Lavinia began her today’s training.

On the other side, as the sun rose, Kael went to the Elder’s Hall with a lazy look on his face. He wasn’t exactly excited for the 12-hour work shift he was about to participate in. These were the times he missed Drakthar. At the very least, whatever he did inside that palace made him stronger, but here, he had other things to worry about.

’Whatever, there is no use complaining now.’

He shook his head and decided to stop thinking about this. His eyes then fell on the big hall in front of him, and he walked in.

Inside, the Matriarch and the Iron Council were waiting for him, even Aelindra—in her half-dead state—was here.

“You are here.”

The Matriarch greeted.

“Good morning to you too.”

Kael greeted back.

“Good morning, huh…”

Morvain muttered to herself. For some reason, she liked the strange greeting. Of course, she didn’t think too much about it and—

“Are you prepared?”

She questioned directly.

Kael nodded, and suddenly, the Matriarch waved her hand and—

“Alrisa.”

She called out.

Step Step Step

At her signal, a woman stepped forward.

An extraordinarily beautiful woman. She had long, wavy midnight-black hair, flowing freely around her shoulders with a natural, untamed grace. Her skin was pale and smooth, almost glowing. Her eyes were sharp and striking, filled with quiet strength and mystery.

Just like everyone around her, she wore a thick black cloak lined with fur, but on her, it seemed quite different. It seemed to strengthen her presence, making her look more powerful and regal.

*Picture*

“This is Alrisa Velmourn.”

Morvain began.

Kael stared at the woman and nodded at her. The woman bowed slightly.

“She will act as your Assigned Liaison to the city.”

Morvain introduced.

“Assigned Liaison?”

Kael tilted his head with a frown.

“That is correct.”

Morvain nodded.

“She serves under the High Chronicler in the Hall of Records. She is our keeper of detail. Letters, timetables, maps, disputes… and visitors, she deals with them all.

If there is something you wish to know about Ashen Heights, after me and High Chronicler Nymeris, she possesses the ability to answer most of your questions.”

Kael glanced at the woman again, a little taken aback.

“From this day forth, she will be staying with you during your time in Ashen Heights. She will help you understand the City, the Customs, and assist you with everything you do from here on out.”

Morvain explained.

At those words, Kael blinked for a moment,

“Wait, does this mean she will—”

“That is correct. Alrisa will be staying with you from morning to night until your work ends, until you have enough understanding of Ashen Heights and get along with other people here.”

Morvain nodded, and Kael turned silent.

Another assistant…

For a moment, he recalled the emotionless robot he was assigned back in Drakthar. He stared at Alrisa, who gave him a bright smile.

“I will be assisting you to the best of my ability, Dragon Rider Kael.”

Hearing those words, Kael smiled back a bit awkwardly.

“Appreciate it.”

He was honestly unsure how to act here. In his heart, however, he was glad that she seemed different compared to the robot he had before.

“Before, I mentioned the Six Veins that keep Ashen Heights alive. You wished to dedicate a day to each of these veins.

Have you chosen what you will be starting with?”

Morvain questioned, and as if on cue,

“If the Dragon Rider needs, I can make a suggestion.”

Alrisa spoke with a trained professionalism.

“Sure…”

Kael nodded, not knowing how else he should react.

“The Forge!”

Alrisa answered without blinking.

“The Dragon Rider is strong. The Forge is a perfect place for you to use that strength. You will also be able to learn how we create weapons that last longer compared to normal weapons you see outside. Of course, a day is still far from enough for you to learn everything, but I am sure it will pique your interest.”

She explained.

Kael stayed silent, thinking over it. Thinking that he wasn’t satisfied,

“Another option you might like is the Watch. Compared to the Forge, this one is comparatively simpler since you only need to keep watch beyond the Walls. Most days, you wouldn’t have to do anything, but there are days when things get dangerous.

Of course, with Dragon Rider’s might, it may not be as dangerous. Your presence will also save countless lives. Not only that, joining the Watch will also give you some time to train on your own, but since you will be sent to the Wall, you wouldn’t be able to experience and learn about the City itself.”

The Assigned Liaison explained everything clearly. As she continued to speak, Kael could see how her presence might actually be helpful.

He nodded at her words and then—

“What about the rest?”

He questioned, curious.

Alrisa stayed silent for a while, as if thinking what to say, and then,

“There are no assemblies currently, so you won’t be able to work as the scriber in the Stone Circle. The Goathold, Farm, and the Hearth…

I cannot picture the Dragon Rider doing any of those. I believe that would be a big waste of your strength.

Of course, we still have time on our hands, so if the Dragon Rider still wishes to, visiting these sites first is also an option.”

The Assigned Liaison answered.

Kael thought about it for a moment, and then he nodded,

“Do you still recommend the Forge?”

“Yes.”

Alrisa nodded.

“Alright then, I will do as you say and begin with the Forge.”

Kael nodded as he stared at Morvain.

“Alright then.”

The Matriarch nodded at his words,

“Good lad.”

Draksis, the Leader of the Forge, grinned as well. He was hoping he would get a few strong hands to use; Kael’s hand would definitely fit the criteria.

“You can leave now.

Alrisa will show you the Forge.”

The Matriarch ordered.

“Yes, Matriarch.”

Kael nodded as he walked out of the Elder’s Hall. Alrisa, like a good Assigned Liaison, responsibly walked behind him.

The moment they walked out—

“Haaahh…”

Alrisa, who had been so uptight all this while, suddenly heaved a big sigh of relief, surprising Kael.

“I apologise, Dragon Rider Kael…”

She muttered lightly.

“It is just that… the Matriarch’s presence is too overwhelming. I feel like something bad would happen if I did something wrong, so I am always on edge when I am around her.”

She spoke without thinking.

“Is the Matriarch that scary?”

Kael questioned, curious.

“She is not scary. She is actually very kind. I just… do not wish to disappoint her.”

Alrisa answered, lowering her head. She seemed like an entirely different person compared to the impression she gave before.

“You probably didn’t disappoint her. Your answers were quite clear.”

Kael muttered. He had no clue what else to say.

“That was the least I should know, else I would not have just disappointed the Matriarch, but Lady Nymeris too.”

“Well…”

Kael turned silent.

“I should be helping you, but I am troubling you instead. I apologise, Dragon Rider Kael.”

The woman sighed again.

“You can call me Kael. Dragon Rider Kael feels too uncomfortable.”

“Okay, Kael.”

Alrisa nodded. She didn’t seem like the type to care too much about formalities. It was something that Kael preferred.

Yep, much better than the robot he had before indeed.
