Doomsday Wonderland

Chapter 1708: You're Ruined Because of Compassion

In the dim experience hall, even the massive flesh mountain opposite had its outline blurred, its details barely discernible.

With the lights out, the duoluozhong in the glass exhibits had become unrecognizable, writhing black silhouettes of twisted shapes. In hindsight, it was a stroke of luck that the tornado hadn't shattered any of the exhibits and released even more duoluozhong.

Bee Sting Venom had already retreated into the hallway's depths. Lin Sanjiu could still hear her rapid, shallow breathing. Strangely, the last time she'd turned back to help someone instead of running, she'd been full of resentment and fear, wishing she could kick herself. This time, though, Lin Sanjiu seemed to... forget to regret it.

Perhaps this was why Ah Quan made sure she remembered being modified: she always knew that her cowardly self wasn't her true self, even in moments of deepest fear and weakness.

"You're wrong about one thing," Lin Sanjiu said in a low voice. "You're difficult to deal with... but I don't need to take you down."

"Hm?"

"My target is your human body."

The fleshbound probably didn't hear her because just as those words left her mouth, an urgent, pounding beat of music exploded from Lin Sanjiu. The fleshbound barely flinched at the sudden sound before she had already lunged forward.

The mastermind's body lay on the ground just a few meters away from the fleshbound's base. As a silver flash shot from Lin Sanjiu's hand, extending mid-air toward the mastermind, the fleshbound realized the danger and swiftly folded down like a wave of flesh, crashing toward her. If it caught her, she would undoubtedly be absorbed into the fleshbound's mass.

Lin Sanjiu narrowly escaped the closing wave of flesh and leapt away. The fleshbound let out a cold laugh.

"Seems my analysis of you was spot on. You only have close-combat moves left. What's the point of music? Even if you want to get my body, you'll have to get close. Go ahead, I'll welcome you. Next time, you might not escape."

It was almost giddy with pride, slowly retracting itself to its original form.

Sure enough... Lin Sanjiu's eyes darted between the fleshbound and the mastermind's body on the ground. Something was odd... If she remembered correctly, this was the second time.

She reached back and put away [Ultra Music Festival]. The thunderous music ebbed away, leaving an abruptly loud silence.

"The tricky part about the fleshbound is its speed and freedom from shape or gravity. Even if you blow its body apart, it won't die. I just need to—huh?"

"Just realized it?" Lin Sanjiu tapped the ground with the pointer in her hand. "Looks like your eyesight isn't great in the dark."

The mastermind's head had vanished, swallowed by a thick cloud of black smoke. It looked as though a black plastic bag had been tied around his neck. The mountain of flesh trembled, the dominant head roaring beneath the ceiling, "Wha-what's going on?"

Lin Sanjiu flicked her hand, putting [Tailor Learning] back into the card inventory. "You were right; I don't have ranged attacks. I do need to get close to strike. But just one touch is enough."

"What is this?" The fleshbound ignored her, a hand bursting from the layers of flesh to swipe at the smoke. It tried to wave it away, but when the hand withdrew, the smoke remained. "What's it doing to my body?"

The fleshbound wasn't bluffing when it said it didn't fear losing its body. Otherwise, it wouldn't have risked sticking its hand into the unknown.

"It doesn't harm your body. It only targets the brain, gradually destroying neurons, killing brain cells, poisoning the gray matter..." Lin Sanjiu smiled. "By the time your consciousness returns, you'll be a harmless idiot."

"Oh, really?" One of the fleshbound's arms grabbed the mastermind's body and flung it aside. Lin Sanjiu's heart leapt, and she chased the unconscious body, diving forward. In a blink, the fleshbound's mass dissolved and vanished, as if the grotesque creature had never existed. "Then I'll just kill you now!"

For the first time, Lin Sanjiu witnessed the fleshbound's true power.

This fleshbound had absorbed many humans in the past, so it had plenty of material to use. When Lin Sanjiu turned to look, she saw the endless expanse of the fleshbound spread across every surface of the small experience hall — the ceiling, walls, floor, and display stands. Flesh-colored human skin rippled like a vast field of wild grass, countless waves of flesh surging toward her. Human heads, eyeballs, toes, and strands of black hair all dispersed in the waves, resembling a hellish stew of boiled human flesh.

If they engaged in direct combat, both sides faced extreme risk and damage. Lin Sanjiu could be absorbed, but the fleshbound would also have its body repeatedly blown apart. It was clear that the fleshbound was truly desperate, driven to recklessness by Lin Sanjiu's black smoke.

Despite the urgency, Lin Sanjiu remembered the unconscious Staff Member No. 8 lying on the floor. As she passed him, she scooped him up and threw him over her shoulder, narrowly preventing him from being absorbed by the fleshbound. The mastermind's body was still twenty steps away. Under normal circumstances, such a distance was nothing, but now, with flesh-colored shadows writhing in the corners of her vision, it felt nearly insurmountable.

Before the waves of flesh could reach her, she picked a direction and dove forward. The last of her Higher Consciousness formed ropes around her shoulders, barely keeping Staff Member No. 8 secured to her back.

Flesh waves spread upward from the floor, snapping at her heels. The ceiling's flesh curtain pressed down on her head repeatedly as she ran. Any flesh that got close had to be blown apart immediately. Her [Mosaic Censorship] was efficient, leaving clusters of flesh fragments exploding in her wake. But the fleshbound seemed unfazed — for its vast, thin body, the parts Lin Sanjiu destroyed were easily expendable.

Her breath was ragged, her vision blurred, yet the dominant head continued speaking effortlessly.

"You're persistent. Do you really think you'll get another chance to touch my human body? What do you plan to do, take it hostage?"

Almost there!

Just as Lin Sanjiu closed the gap to the unconscious body, the dominant head let out a distant, shadowy sigh.

Its voice seemed to sway with the waves of flesh, now from the high ceiling, now from the deep hallway, yet it came through clearly. "I knew you were after my human body. Do you think I wouldn't prepare for that?"

Lin Sanjiu's heart skipped a beat. She abruptly halted just a step or two away from the mastermind's body. At that moment, a massive curtain of flesh descended from the ceiling, sweeping over the mastermind's body and brushing past her nose.

Had she been a second slower, her entire head would have been swallowed by the flesh curtain.

Though she dodged quickly, her sudden stop threw her off balance. Cold sweat burst across her back as she stumbled and fell to the ground.

As the fleshbound laughed, Lin Sanjiu managed to escape the surging flesh waves with another explosion. But the unconscious Staff Member No. 8 on her back wasn't so lucky. Her Higher Consciousness had run out, and as she fell, his body tumbled away.

"Your downfall is your mercy." The fleshbound's voice turned slow and thick, as if savoring a mouthful of food. "You could have left that woman behind, but you didn't. You could have left this man, but you had to carry him..."

A flesh-colored shadow extended across the floor. When it reached the man's body, a wave silently folded over him, like a mouth closing around a morsel of food.

"The parts of my body you destroyed can be replenished..." The dominant head trembled with pleasure. "No, even more than you destroyed... Enough to make me grow... grow... grow even larger..."

Lin Sanjiu crouched on the ground, panting. The brief exchange had drained much of her strength. Nearby, the body with the black smoke-covered head lay motionless. It seemed as easy to reach as a fruit dangling from a branch, but she knew the fleshbound had a trick up its sleeve.

She was waiting for the moment the fleshbound realized something was wrong.

"What a strong, youthful body," the fleshbound said with satisfaction. "Those big muscles, those thighs... I, uh... huh?"

1

The flesh shadow, which had been pulsing rhythmically, suddenly froze.

Lin Sanjiu couldn't help but smile, just a little.
