Chapter 1894: Chapter 1894 City in the Sky

— Green —

Green had just finished her small nap and was ready to get back to exploring the sewers. Well, ready might be a strong word. She’d found an old break room that was warded against it the smell. It even had a working shower in it. There had been bedding at one point in time but it had deteriorated to the point it didn’t function as such anymore. Green was more than capable of just using the floor. After she cleaned it with some of the water from the shower. Green was careful with that. The sewer had clearly dried out and she had no idea how much water the show could still supply so she was quick with her own, and light on the stuff she took to scrub the floor.

As much as Green had wanted to sleep for a lot longer, she’d left her Timmy with instructions to wake her up should anything try to enter the room, or two hours past. “Urgh,” groaned Green as she pushed herself up off the wall. Her desire to sit back down and rest more was strong but she had work to do. Orbs to find and whatnot.

Slipping out the room Green resolutely ignored the stench and kept moving. With the break room here she suspected there was an exit somewhere nearby as well. Green had found a few other ’exits’ so far but they were all inaccessible for one reason or another. The first she’d found had been a rusty ladder near a collapsed section of the sewers. The ladder itself didn’t look the safest and the rest of the floor had been missing. There was also no certainty it was an exit on account of not being able to get close due to the ’flooring issues’.

If the ladder had looked to be in better condition Green might have attempted it… but Green was nearly certain it would break under her weight. She had some good equipment and there was a chance at recovery… but if she failed that they likely wouldn’t be recharged in time to save her from the fall. Not worth it after all the hours she’d spent climbing up here.

The next exit she’d found was locked up tightly. That or there was something heavy on the trapdoor she’d been trying to climb out of. The ladder was in… acceptable condition when she found it and the floor was fine. Climbing up hadn’t been hard but popping the trapdoor or manhole cover open? Impossible. There was no lock she could find, Green had destroyed the hinges in case they were rusted closed… but the thing still wouldn’t open for her. Not even a tiny bit. In the end, for all of her efforts it was the ladder rung that gave way first, snapping in half where her foot had been pressing down on it.

After thirty minutes of searching, Green had found it… or she was pretty sure she had anyway. There were some remnants of a ladder, a bunch of debris littering the ground… but most importantly there was a beam of light sneaking in from up above. Swiftly running over Green could see that it did indeed go outside. Of course, it was still in the evening so that light wasn’t the sun, but a magical street lamp shining down the whole. “Oops… that’s… actually pretty lucky for me…” mumbled Green as she realised that she might’ve gone past a few of these before.

Shrugging Green took a running start and used her boots to launch herself up into the ’tube’ at the top. Leaping from one side of the wall to the other, her boots were able to find just enough friction to keep her moving upwards. She was slowing down in her ascent… but an outstretched hand was enough to catch onto the edge of the hole and pull herself up. Green yanked herself onto the dirty street and grinned.

Not even Timmy rocketing up after her and nearly getting stabbed could dampen her mood. “Finally out of that shithole!” whispered Green cheerily. She didn’t want to yell in case someone had beaten her to the area, or if there was something waiting around. Still, she was happy to be out the sewers. Plus, while it was still dark out it wasn’t too hot.

Looking around at the building, there were a lot of rounded tops to all of the buildings. Green couldn’t quite get the idea out of her head that it looked like someone had placed a bunch of boobs on top of their buildings, but it did sort of look like that to her eyes. Mostly round, somewhat squished with a dot on top. It was a silly image, and she personally blamed the lack of proper sleep for it sticking in her mind… but it wasn’t necessarily wrong.

Sadly, for all that amusement the area around her wasn’t in the best shape. Plenty of nearby houses had collapsed in on themselves and were nothing but rubble. The streets were covered in sand and dust. There were some glimpses of a proper street underneath all of that but it was hard to spot without looking. In the distance, there were a few notable buildings that had withstood the implied test of time. They were likely to be some of her first destinations.

Green hopped up onto one of the sturdier seeming buildings nearby to get a proper sense of what was around. The buildings she wanted to get to… were sadly quite spread out. Green had found herself somewhere close to one edge of the city. She had one of those big buildings nearby… but it was easily the smallest and most squat of the three. In the complete opposite direction, the north-east of the city, was by far the largest building.

It had multiple ’boob’ tops fitted on spires and overlooked the city from what she guessed was an elevated position. Green could just barely see the tips of the walls from where she was. They weren’t entirely intact but they were mostly together and holding up well compared to the top of the city.

There was a smattering of other larger buildings around the city. One close to the centre. Not quite the exact centre, but good enough for navigational purposes. It was clearly smaller than what she suspected to be the palace but it was still larger than the building she was near. Perhaps it was some sort of governmental building for more every-day tasks?

Up in the north-west were a collection of three tall buildings with much smaller footprints. It was hard to tell exact sizes from a distance and no visibility on the base of the buildings but they seemed to be about the same size as the one near to her, just taller and less spread out. The real draw was that the three of them were so close together.

There was a smattering of others around, though none quite as grand. They might not even be important at all. It was also worth noting that off towards the south-east there just… wasn’t really anything. Oh sure there was plenty of rubble and a few normal-sized buildings but there wasn’t anything visibly important that could be seen from here. Green suspected that meant whatever had been there before had been destroyed, or perhaps never built in the first place.

“Hmm… so what do you think Timmy? Do I head for the obviously important building in the north-east? Do I instead head for the one closest to me? Or perhaps the one near the centre as a compromise? The three over in the north-west? That’s kind of greedy Timmy, I’m not sure I should just rush for those ones. Besides wouldn’t the palace have better loot?” said Green, talking to herself. Timmy hadn’t so much as twitched during the conversation to provide any guidance.

Of course, simply saying all of that out loud had helped Green organise her own thoughts somewhat. The three off to the north-west weren’t all that close to her due to her relative position. It was basically the same distance as the ’palace’ and if she was going to double time it to any location that had to be the one she chose.

The nearest building and the centre were the only real contenders. There wasn’t too much of a difference in travel time by the looks of things, and the annoying part of going for the closest location was that she was travelling further away from everything else. It made going for the centre really, really tempting. A quick check there for anything good than she could go off to the palace right afterwards. Well… perhaps another nap was in order if she had a lot to look over in that building but nothing more than an hour of sleep.

At the same time, doing that felt almost like giving up on the one nearest to her. She could see it now, going first for the centre, then the castle, than the last three… before deciding it would take too long to backtrack for this final building. Unless what she found in the others was outstanding… but if she DID find a bunch of interesting and noteworthy things, plus some challenges then it could take her days to get through it all. Days someone else could use to find there way up here.

*Really though… that settles it. I don’t think I’m willing to give up whatever loot is in the palace. So off to the centre I suppose. We’ll see how long I’ll want to stay there soon…*
