D.E.M.O.N.S: Getting Summoned Weekly isn't so Bad
Chapter 1722: Uncomfortable Car Questions--- Kat --- (Two Days Later. The Weekend)
As a sort of apology for being away so long Kat had asked Sylvie what she wanted to do… and her answer had been explore the woods. Kat wasn’t sure WHY that was her answer and didn’t exactly feel like it was her place to ask either. Lily was spending time with her parents, even if she was technically just a thought away, Kat was trying to avoid that for now. It was meant to be time for her to spend with Sylvie. Well… it was meant to be.
Kat wasn’t annoyed, it was just a touch awkward. Alice’s Grandmother, on her Dad’s side had gotten really sick and needed some help so her parents had gone off to help with that. There was some consideration about taking Alice along, but it was decided it wasn’t worth the risk of her getting sick as well so they’d rung up and asked if it was fine to stay over with Sylvie. That was fine, and of course Penny’s guardians were down for any excuse after she was also offered a chance to stay. Discover hidden tales at NovelBin.Côm
Now Kat didn’t begrudge any of that. If Sylvie wanted to spend time with everyone together that was completely fine… BUT it would’ve been nice if she was warned first. Instead, Hank had dropped off Alice and Penny earlier in the morning and Kat just… had no way to hide that she was a demon. There wasn’t anything prepared and she’d just been messing around in the backyard when Sylvie had come through.
She was lucky enough that she wasn’t performing any magic at the time… but it had freaked her out a little. The slight smirk on Sylvie’s face indicated this was very much intentional. So… Kat had just had to roll with it. She didn’t have a fake headband or anything to make the wings look less real so she just… didn’t say anything about them. The kids didn’t either interestingly enough.
Kat wondered if Sylvie had said something beforehand. Perhaps a request not to mention it… or just admitted the truth that she was a demon and expected the absurdity of that statement to mean the girls disbelieved it in principle? Kat didn’t know and she didn’t want to ask lest she need to actually come up with something as an answer.
Callisto was driving them to the forest itself, and then she was going to look for materials. Apparently. The three kids were in the back and Kat was quite thankful that there questions seemed mostly to revolve around the fact she had a girlfriend which was… interesting. A bit awkward but interesting.
*I mean… what exactly am I meant to explain to these kids? Like Sylvie knows because of her obsession with medical textbooks but like… I don’t want to talk to them about romance! Certainly nothing too specific… but I can’t lie! So what am I meant to say if the questions get more serious?!*
Backing up a few momnets before Kat was starting to panic, Alice asked the first question. "So like… you and Lily are dating right?"
"Yes that’s correct," stated Kat."So… like… does that mean you’re going to get married?" was the follow up question.
*See… how do I answer that? Yes obviously we are but that’s because we’re bound by a magic. I can be confident and secure in my relationship because we’re mentally connected so marriage is a tiny step that’s going to happen eventually. Well, maybe not legally I need to check if we’re still on ’straight couples only’ laws for that… but dammit to I make it seem like marriage is no big deal? That we’re certain just because we love each other? Urgh!*
"That’s the plan," was Kat’s eventual non-answer.
"So… you’re like my Mum and Dad then?" asked Alice.
"Ah… probably?" said Kat unsure. "It really depends on what you mean by that question…"
"You’re going to stay together forever!" stated Alice. Kat winced slightly. Having grown up in an orphanage she was quite aware that even with loving couples that didn’t always meant they got to stick together forever. At the same time…
There was only one answer. "Once again that’s the plan! Life can be unpredictable but I hope Lily will be by my side forever,"
"That’s nice. Do you think I should look for a boyfriend when I grow up? Or a girlfriend? You both seem really happy but so do my parents… so I wonder what’s better?" asked Alice.
Kat glanced over at Sylvie and tried to convey ’please Sylvie help me escape this’. Sadly the deadpan glare back probably meant ’this is your punishment for being away so long deal with it yourself’ or at least, that was how Kat was interpreting it.
"That’s not really a question I know how to answer. I mean, I didn’t exactly go looking but Lily found me anyway… or well… no it depends on how you look at things. Arguably I adopted her as my friend first and then she later decided we were dating and I agreed it was a great idea," said Kat without going into details. She was intentionally leaving out huge chunks of context but… what else was she meant to say.
"That’s not a very helpful answer," grumbled Alice.
IT WASN’T MEANT TO BE. "Sorry about that," said Kat, surprised she could actually get the words out. "It’s just one of those things that starts to make more sense when you get older. For now you’ve got your friends and great parents so it’s not really something to worry about. I’m sure it will just come to you one day. That tends to be how it works,"
Alice frowned and looked over at Sylvie to ask ’Is that really how it works?’ with her eyes. Sylvie just gave a shrug. "I dunno, it’s not really something I’ve looked into much," Alice turned to Penny with the same gaze.
"Don’t look at me. I don’t think I want to date anyone. Sure Kat and Lily are cute together but dating someone just seems like so much work. I’d rather just get a math degree. Seems like so much less work," stated Penny.
Kat snickered. "I’m not sure if many people would agree with you Penny but I’m sure you can manage it if that’s how you want things to work out,"
Callisto had remained silent for the conversation up to this point. Mostly because it was amusing and somewhat because she agreed with Sylvie that Kat could stand to deal with a bit of discomfort as penance. Still, they were just about to be at their destination. "Get ready to head out girls. We are just around the corner from the trail. Make sure you have got everything you need. Your shoes are on, the water is packed and that somebody has spare sunscreen,"
Kat grabbed the bag and the eski after double checking that everything was packed and stepped out of the car. Once they’d all left Callisto called out again, "I will be heading deeper in to look for some deadwood for my projects. I should be back long before you all finish with your walk and it loops around so if I get here early I will take the track backwards until I run into you all,"
"What counts as the back path?" asked Kat.
"The obvious one. There is a semi-hidden exit on your left about two hundred metres down the track. If you just keep going straight you will remain on the correct one… assuming it is still in walkable condition. This place has not been added to the maps yet and it gets less maintenance then most of the others so just be careful," explained Callisto.
Kat nodded, that was in fact why they’d picked this track. It was one thing for the girls to see her wings and not comment but another thing entirely for a bunch of random strangers to see them. The wings and horns together would give people ideas. Technically correct ones too so it could be a major problem if she was asked outright.
"Alright then girls. Let’s head off. Do you want me in front to make sure that we know where we’re going and that any random strays branches hit me first or do you want me in the back to ensure that nobody gets lost?" asked Kat knowing her hearing was more than good enough to keep track of the three girls even should that happen.
Penny shrugged, Alice looked off towards Sylvie and Sylvie took that to mean it was her decision. She thought about it for a bit and shrugged, it didn’t really matter. She knew Kat was fast enough to stop anything coming at them from the front or back and the chances of someone getting lost was nearly zero because of it. "In front I guess." So really Kat knocking aside a bunch of branches for them was the least she could do.
"Alright then, follow me and don’t go wondering off! A demon might find you if that happens!" said Kat with a grin.
