Chapter 72: Feast (2)

Dion’s curiosity had been piqued, but the bustling activity around them demanded their attention. Jayce, with a few polite words, dismissed the paladin for the moment. The time for such discussions would come, but for now, there was work to be done.

Turning his focus back to the task at hand, Jayce set about butchering the remaining oversized portions of the wolf. He was determined not to let any part of the majestic creature go to waste, considering the sizable crowd that would soon be gathering for the feast. With precision and expertise, he cleaned and prepared the offal, ensuring that everything was ready to be cooked.

Although Jayce had never personally cooked with entrails before, his trusty ingredient analysis skill took away any uncertainty. It not only guided him in the optimal ways to cook each part, but it also suggested recipes and even provided real-time temperature readings to help him gauge the cooking progress.

As time flowed like a swift river, Jayce became engrossed in his work. Amidst mountains of food and a controlled chaos, he efficiently managed his tasks. Fatigue began to show on his face, with droplets of sweat trickling down, but his smile remained unbroken. It was a pure smile, untainted by the burdens of the new world.

Lianna couldn’t help but admire Jayce from her discreet vantage point. Her gorgeous green eyes followed his every move with intrigue as he immersed himself in his cooking. Watching him cook had always brought her a sense of comfort. His smile, so carefree and genuine, seemed to transcend the harsh realities of their new world. It was a rare sight to behold, and it tugged at something deep within her.

Expertly, Jayce handled the vegetables with his well-practiced knifework, further deepening her admiration. She couldn’t contain a soft sigh, her heart warming at the scene unfolding before her.

Suddenly, Jackie, her companion and friend, approached with a playful nudge to Lianna’s ribs. She couldn’t help but jump at the unexpected contact. Jackie couldn’t contain her amusement as she teased, “If you keep drooling like that, you’ll need a new outfit soon.” She chuckled at Lianna’s reaction, who responded by sticking her tongue out.

“He looks so happy when he’s cooking,” Lianna sighed wistfully. Her gaze remained fixed on Jayce, who continued his culinary dance with infectious joy.

Jackie nodded in agreement but chose not to verbalize it. Instead, she watched her friend closely as Lianna sighed once more, her gaze still on Jayce.

“It’s like there are three versions of Jayce,” Lianna began to explain, her thoughts spilling out. “One on the battlefield, where he’s always in control, fearless and domineering. Another when he’s cooking, carefree and full of joy. The last is when he’s alone… he seems so distant, as if the weight of the world is on his shoulders.” She shook her head, her brows furrowing with concern. “I don’t know which one is the real him.”

Jackie, ever the wise and understanding friend, placed an arm around Lianna’s shoulder and pulled her closer. “That’s men for you,” she quipped. “Well, a real man, I should say. A real man knows when to take charge, when to relax and savor the moment, and when to plan for the future.”

She nodded subtly toward Colin, who was engrossed in lively conversation with some of the locals not far away. “Take a look at Colin, for example.”

Lianna followed Jackie’s gaze to Colin, who appeared to be the life of the party, laughing and making merry. Her eyes dulled momentarily as she observed him.

“I’m sorry, Jackie, but I don’t quite understand,” Lianna admitted, her curiosity piqued.

Jackie chuckled, her eyes still fixed on Colin. “Keep watching,” she encouraged.

Lianna continued to observe Colin, and after a while, she began to notice a pattern. Every 10 to 20 seconds, Colin would discreetly glance over at Jayce, his eyes focused and vigilant. He seemed particularly attentive when others drew near Jayce, disregarding them once he deemed them non-threatening.

Lianna’s eyes widened as realization dawned upon her.

Jackie chuckled once more, her tone knowing. “Even though he may seem like a boisterous pain in the butt, he has his own sense of duty. While it may not be as grand as Jayce’s, it’s just as important to him.”

The young girl thought she knew what her friend was trying to say, but she didn’t want to make any assumptions. “So are you saying that it’s completely normal for men to be distant and not to read into it?”

Jackie shook her head, “I’m saying that men deal with their problems in different ways. A real man will do it in a way where it does not affect those who are close to him, at times suffering silently.”

“However, it takes a real woman to be able to share his burdens.” she added, after seeing the frown appear on Lianna’s pretty features.

“A real woman…” she muttered to itself, her eyes gazing at Jayce’s busy figure. The shadows of the flickering fire danced upon his handsome face, illuminating the beads of sweat that were rolling down.

In that moment, Lianna swore in her heart that she would strive to become a woman befitting of a real man like Jayce. The initial infatuation had grown into something more, threatening to overcome her sanity. “I will become a real woman… Jayce’s woman.” she declared in a soft voice.

“What was that?” Jackie asked in a smiling tone.

Lianna, who had forgotten that Jackie was right next to her suddenly felt a hot flush reach her face, shrinking back in embarrassment. “N-Nothing!” she said in a hurried voice, almost screaming out her response.

Jayce, engrossed in his culinary endeavors, was abruptly drawn from his cooking by the sound of a squeal. His gaze instinctively sought the source, locking onto Lianna’s eyes. However, within the span of a heartbeat, her complexion turned an even deeper shade of crimson, and she hurriedly averted her gaze and retreated.

Baffled by the sudden commotion, Jayce couldn’t help but mutter under his breath, “That was odd.” He glanced inquisitively at Jackie, who was positioned beside Lianna during the exchange.

With a knowing grin, Jackie replied in kind, her response a vivid mime zipping her lips together. Conveying that her lips were sealed.
