Chapter 57: Bloodfang Wolves (5)
In an instant, the atmosphere was charged with an electric intensity as Jayce and the battered Alpha wolf lunged at each other with unmatched determination. The clash was desperate and savage, a collision of fury against survival instincts. The wolf’s fangs and claws slashed through the air, aiming to tear apart its adversary, but Jayce’s movements seemed fueled by an otherworldly rage that defied the odds.
Jayce’s every step was resolute, his focus solely on delivering his blows regardless of the consequences. He paid little heed to the wolf’s attacks that tore at his flesh, driven forward by his overwhelming hatred and a need to avenge Colin’s sacrifice. Lianna’s healing magic flowed through him, like a soothing balm that dulled the sharp pains and allowed him to press on.
As Jayce’s form became a whirlwind of relentless strikes, Ben and Paul seized the opportunity. They charged alongside him, their swords finding purchase in the soft underbelly of the colossal wolf. The wolf remained silent, its eyes locked onto Jayce with an intensity of hatred that transcended mere survival instincts.
Razor sharp claws filled with the blood of Jayce and its kin slashed wildly through the air, aiming to take apart the humans in front of it. The proud Alpha Wolf who prided itself on its intelligence had been fooled by its prey, being cornered so easily had infuriated it.
Jayce’s gaze held steady, unwavering in the face of the Alpha’s rage. It was a stare that cut through the darkness and met the wolf’s fiery crimson eyes, a battle of wills that spoke of resolve and defiance. The Alpha’s life was slipping away, its strength waning, but its thirst for vengeance was undiminished.
It reared its huge head, bringing down its maw with the purpose of ripping Jayce’s head from his shoulders. Yet it had forgotten that its once powerful jaw had been broken in the earlier fight against its kin. The sharp teeth glanced against Jayce’s head, however he easily knocked it aside, sending his Sashimi Knife upwards into its hanging jaw and piercing deep.
Jayce brought the knife down, attempting to gut the Alpha Wolf from its jaw towards its chest. The sharpness of the knife made the task as easy as running a hot knife through butter, causing the wolf to let out a gurgled roar of pain.
It recoiled, standing up on its hind legs and letting out another pained howl. In the next moment, a sudden and unexpected intervention erupted. From the darkness, an ice lance shot forth with incredible speed, piercing the air and striking the wolf’s right eye with pinpoint accuracy. The ice lance impaled the wolf’s eye socket and erupted from the back of its skull in a burst of crimson and ice.
The Alpha’s body convulsed, a mixture of agony and shock painting its features. The once blood-red eyes now held a vacant and lifeless glaze. The massive creature collapsed to the ground, its life force extinguished. The forest fell into an eerie silence, as if even nature itself recognized the culmination of this fierce battle.
Jayce stood over the fallen Alpha, his chest heaving with exertion and his sashimi knife stained with the wolf’s blood. A mixture of exhaustion, triumph, and grief played across his face. Lianna’s healing magic enveloped him once again, knitting his wounds together and bringing a sense of relief to his battered body.
The party members slowly gathered around the fallen beast, their own expressions reflecting the tumultuous emotions they had endured. This was a victory, but one that had come at great cost. Colin’s absence was a gaping hole in their hearts, a reminder of the sacrifices made in this harsh world.
[You have slain – Bloodfang Alpha Wolf Boss]
[Congratulations, you have leveled up!]
[Congratulations…]
Jayce was in no mood to read the notifications that were appearing in front of him, nor bask in the costly victory of slaying the Alpha. The only thing he wanted to do right now was get some rest. His muscles were aching and his heart was hurting, the emotions that tore through him at the site of the Alpha had subsided, now leaving him feeling empty.
He walked over to the place where Colin had fallen, only his Immovable Wall remained, now scattered with crimson blood. He bent down to collect the shield, intending to give it to Jackie as a memento, even though it was their best item by far.
However, as he went to pick up the shield it did not budge. He tried a few times with both hands, even using his full strength to do so, yet it was like the thing was cemented to the ground. He paused for a moment, staring at the shield, trying to find a reason.
Suddenly his eyes lit up, a faint possibility making its way into his mind. He was afraid… Afraid that he was wrong, afraid that it was all just wishful thinking. A part of him thought that it could be his brain trying to save itself from the responsibility of Colin’s death.
Yet he got down on his knees and began to furiously dig with his hands. He dug with such speed and force that his nails began to come off from the pressure, but he did not care. His mind was holding onto the possibility, even if it was miniscule.
The party watched on as their leader dug up the earth, their faces painted with mixed emotions. Ben and Paul looked crestfallen, thinking that Jayce’s mind had broken. A surge of anger ran through Ben, seeing the state of their once brilliant and confident leader.
Before he could storm over to put a stop to the pitiful show, Zane walked past them and joined Jayce, using a nearby stick as a makeshift shovel. Jayce looked up, tears streaming down his face, only to receive a wordless nod from Zane.
Jackie made her way over to the duo, her face looked as if she was wearing an emotionless mask were it not for the trails of tears that covered her cheeks. She wordlessly raised her hand, creating a shovel made from ice and began to dig next to Jayce.
Amber and Lianna were the next to join in, leaving Ben and Paul to watch on with confusion. Why were they buying into Jayce’s delusions? Jackie of all people should have been the most upset, wouldn’t seeing Jayce break down affect her the most?
They let out a sigh almost simultaneously, before joining in. They themselves did not know why everyone had entertained this folly, but whether it was their camaraderie or just human nature, they felt like they would regret not lending a hand.
The group dug deeper, eventually reaching 3 feet down. Jayce then began towards the earth that was directly underneath the platinum shield, all of his focus poured into digging.
At one point, the soil began to feel lighter, as if it had been displaced before, not compacted like usual. Jayce reached the end, feeling the soil about to give way, and then it happened. The soil crumbled, falling into the 3 foot deep hole they had dug, revealing a muscled arm tightly holding onto the brace of the shield.
“Lianna!” Jayce yelled.
