Chapter 44: High Troll (2)

Chapter 44: High Troll (2)

Summoning his determination, Jayce dashed forward, his eyes locking onto the monster’s thick, gnarled legs. His agility surged as he approached, avoiding debris and rubble as he closed the distance. With a burst of speed, he leaped onto the High Troll’s leg, his knife gleaming as he aimed for the tendons that supported the behemoth’s movements.

His blade sliced through the tough hide with a satisfying resistance, the High Troll bellowing in pain as its leg faltered. Jayce’s heart raced as he scrambled to find a foothold, his knife becoming a tool of precision in a battle of giants.

His gambit seemed to pay off, as the High Troll’s leg buckled beneath its weight, sending the beast crashing to its knees. The ground shook with the impact, and the party seized the opportunity to renew their assault. Spells and strikes rained down upon the fallen monster, each blow filled with determination to take the beast down.

However, their moment of triumph was short-lived. The High Troll’s retaliatory swing was swift and devastating. Colin, who had been in the midst of an attack, couldn’t evade in time. The troll’s massive fist connected with a bone-crushing impact, sending him hurtling through the air.

“Colin!” Jayce’s voice was a mix of shock and horror as he watched his friend’s body crash against the ground, the impact sending dust and debris into the air. Jackie’s face paled and she let out a shrill scream, however in the next moment she poured her magic power into her staff, unleashing a gigantic Ice Lance towards the wide back of the High Troll.

Time seemed to slow down as Jackie’s gigantic ice lance plunged into the High Troll’s back, the beast was sent crashing face-first into the ground, an impact that seemed to shake the very foundation of the world.

For a moment, stunned silence enveloped the battlefield. The party’s hearts suspended between hope and despair. The High Troll lay there, its colossal form still and lifeless. The impossible had happened – they had brought down the behemoth.

But hope turned to trepidation as the monster stirred, its body showing signs of movement despite the fatal-looking wound. Jayce’s mind raced, his thoughts a chaotic whirlwind of confusion and concern. The Ice Lance that had felled the creature hadn’t seemed to penetrate deeply enough. Desperation clawed at his chest as he tried to fathom what they could do next.

And then, like a ray of light breaking through the storm clouds, Colin leaped into the air, seemingly from nowhere. The giant’s roar reverberated through the air, his weapon transforming into a makeshift hammer as he descended upon the ice lance. The impact was cataclysmic, causing the world to tremble as the ice lance was driven further into the High Troll’s body, piercing its heart.

The sight was awe-inspiring, as Colin’s relentless determination and power singlehandedly delivered the finishing blow. The High Troll’s struggles ceased, its massive body finally defeated. As the creature’s form went limp, Colin landed back on the ground with an exhaustion that radiated from every pore.

Jayce watched this with a mixture of relief and admiration. Colin’s extraordinary feat was a testament to his indomitable spirit, his willingness to put himself on the line for the sake of their group. This mind-frame was probably what earned him the name “Divine Shield” from the system.

However, he had just seen Colin receive a near-fatal blow, how had he recovered so fast? As Jayce’s gaze shifted toward where Colin had originally fallen after the High Troll’s strike, he saw Lianna, her expression pale yet proud. Their eyes met in a silent exchange that spoke volumes. It was her healing that had brought Colin back from the brink, her unyielding support that had empowered him to rise once more.

Lianna smiled and gave a thumbs up, conveying more than any words could. The smile was infectious, Jayce could feel a grin tugging at the edge of his lips, without any additional words he reciprocated the gesture.

The battlefield was a scene of astonishment and relief as the party gathered their senses after the mighty struggle. The High Troll lay still, its massive form finally defeated by the combined efforts of Jayce and his companions. The atmosphere was thick with a mixture of triumph and exhaustion, and Jayce felt a strange blend of emotions coursing through his veins.

Jackie’s ice lance, though not initially as deadly as they had hoped, had proven pivotal in bringing the beast to its knees. And then came Colin’s monumental strike, a final blow that seemed to resonate with the very earth itself. The display of strength and teamwork left everyone in awe, their faith in each other solidified through the crucible of battle.

As Jackie rushed to Colin’s side, the others began to gather around, their concern for their fallen comrade evident. Jayce watched with a mixture of gratitude and admiration, his heart swelling at the sight of his friends standing together, the bonds forged in the heat of battle stronger than ever.

[You have slain – High Troll Boss]

[You are the first to kill a High Troll Boss and will receive an epic item]

[Immovable Wall (Epic) Acquired]

Jayce skimmed the notifications that appeared in front of him, too tired to properly read them. However, his eyes widened after seeing the word Boss, knowing that they had been blessed with another Epic item drop.

However, now was not the time to celebrate. With the slaying of the High Troll, the other monsters in the vicinity would likely be returning soon. Although they had enough intelligence to run away from the giant monster, that did not mean they wouldn’t attack the party on sight, despite knowing that they had slain the boss.

He allowed the party to rest for a few minutes before turning to Zane, pointing to both his eyes, the signal to scout ahead. Zane nodded wordlessly before disappearing. Jayce headed over to the remainder of the party who was crowded around Colin, with a smile on his face.

“You were right, You’re a tough bastard to kill.” Jayce said, lending a hand to the giant man who was sprawled on his back in exhaustion. Colin laughed weakly, before reaching up and clasping the hand offered, with a smooth motion the smaller man lifted him to his feet.

“Let’s regroup after finding a place to rest up.” Jayce said, feeling the palpable exhaustion throughout the party.
