Chapter 1353: Eyes
The attack resembled one of Khan’s defensive spells. Except his mana had taken the shape of bright flames instead of wild gales that conveyed the destructive nature of his element.
Also, the flames didn’t expand spherically. They raged everywhere as if they were fiery waves, stretching as far as their scorching fabric allowed them to.
The swarm of ant-like mana beasts was powerless before those bright flames. The fire burned their very existence, setting the ground and air aflame while settling on the scorched surface underneath.
The ants’ defeat didn’t seem to satisfy the flames since their scorching tongues kept flickering around and above the spell’s main body, almost acting as petals of a flower that demanded something else to burn.
Moreover, the flames themselves weren’t simple. Sparks ran over their surfaces, occasionally mixing thundering noises with their crackling. The embers they released in the air also burned the mana they touched, wiping out more of the planet’s azure color.
Of course, the married couple didn’t spare the swarm a single thought. Khan and Liiza only focused on the spell itself, checking its structure and overall power to see if it was worthy of his broader version of his element.
The flames still fell under Khan’s destructive sides but were quite different from his lightning bolts. They burned hotter, lasted longer, and didn’t need to be thrown. They seemed to lean heavily toward the Niqols’ arts, and their raging flickering almost felt alive.
“[See]?” Khan exclaimed, pointing at his still-flickering spell. “[Fire]!”
Liiza momentarily ignored her husband’s idiotic remark to continue studying the spell. Its flickering tongues had yet to extinguish and were still burning the surrounding mana, so the planet didn’t immediately summon another pack of fearsome creatures, creating the perfect window for that inspection.
The inspection mainly focused on the nature Khan’s mana had expressed. While it still abided by his destructive side, it was indeed different from simple beams or his lightning bolts, vouching for a deepening of his mastery and understanding of his new state.
Still, Liiza didn’t feel like labeling those flames as actual fire. Their texture was very liquid, pushing them closer to scorching waves rather than what they tried to imitate.
Also, the sparks flowing over the scorching tongues made the spell lean toward a different shape altogether. It was quite a mess of various features blended into something that somewhat worked. Still, that probably suited Khan well.
“[Is fire different on Earth]?” Liiza joked, unconvinced. “[But why does it feel so angry]?”
“[Ah! I thought about our daughter’s first suitor to summon it],” Khan proudly claimed, crossing his arms. “[These flames carry my raging fatherly passion].”
“[Why just the first]?” Liiza wondered, tilting her head in doubt.
“[You set an example with the first],” Khan said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. “[The others will learn to stay away afterward].”
Liiza chuckled but didn’t add anything as the couple resumed their advance. Truth be told, they rarely stopped moving at all due to how swiftly they disposed of every new pack.
The still-raging flames bought the couple a lot of time, but they eventually dispersed, and the azure air stirred again, amassing in the sky to give birth to more mana beasts.
“[What else]?” Liiza asked as the couple continued strolling through that deadly planet, unbothered by the huge bat-like monsters that had formed above them.
“[I sort of cracked the Niqols’ symbols],” Khan revealed, trails of purple-red mana escaping his shoulders to amass above his head. “[Though they did take a peculiar shape].”
The bat-like monsters had already started to descend toward the couple, but Khan and Liiza only looked up to check his spell. His mana was still condensing, but three separate shapes had begun to form, revealing their peculiarities.
Previously, Khan’s version of the Thilku runes involved an arrangement of different lines with specific meanings that would generate a precise purpose once fused.
However, the Niqols’ symbols took that field one step further. They couldn’t express complex meanings but were more profound and intrinsic, removing the need for technicalities and easing the burden on Khan’s mind.
Of course, Khan didn’t learn the entirety of the Niqols’ runes. He had lacked the time. Still, he didn’t need to since replicating them had never been his goal. Khan only wanted to understand the theory behind them to fuse it with his skills.
Khan had succeeded, albeit the result was quite peculiar. He had only wanted to summon runes that embodied his personal meaning for “power” now, and their shapes ended up surprising Liiza.
The runes above Khan’s head weren’t actual symbols. They were elliptical figures that reminded Liiza of the taller alien scout’s technique.
Yet, a vertical gap stood at the center of those ellipses, connecting their long edges, making them resemble reptilian eyes. That probably was what Khan’s mana had attempted to recreate, and it wasn’t hard to understand why.
The Scarlet Eyes in Khan’s hallucination had left a deep mark in his mind. Also, the Great Old One’s genes and memories had influenced his subconscious, giving birth to those peculiar shapes when he sought to summon raw power.
There was another influence, too. Khan had gotten the idea from his battle against Muhsin, liking how the Kros could create multiple weapons around him. Khan’s Thilku runes had been too heavy on his mind to summon many of them simultaneously, but the Niqols’ symbols didn’t carry that flaw.
The bat-like mana beasts were almost upon the couple when the three reptilian eyes released all the energy they had absorbed from Khan, unleashing simple but massive beams at the sky.
The beams instantly obliterated the cloud of bats while rising far higher and expanding far wider. Their purple-red light removed a massive chunk of azure from the sky, leaving three empty, gigantic black scars behind.
That was the most damage Khan had inflicted on the azure planet yet, but the achievement was hardly praiseworthy. After all, his runes had always been capable of such vast and powerful effects. However, Liiza knew that there was more to it, and Khan promptly highlighted what.
“[I can summon fifty of these with but a thought],” Khan revealed, “[But I can probably only afford to fill around ten or fifteen with my mana alone. I should be able to do more as my attunement increases].”
