Chapter 1338: Bad news

Chapter 1338: Bad news

“[Do you want an entire species to babysit your daughter]?” Doku joked.

“[Actually],” Khan replied, being completely serious. “[I’d have the Niqols meet with the Nele on Coravis to start coordinating with all my forces to babysit my daughter].”

Doku fell silent, slightly stunned at those silent implications. Khan didn’t explicitly say it, but Doku knew how vastly his alliance spread. Basically, Khan intended to put most of the regulated universe in charge of taking care of his daughter.

To make things even more surprising, that plan was feasible. The Niqols were already too far away from home, and a ceasefire would make Khan’s planet the nearest checkpoint. Khan might truly get his army of babysitters if the negotiations went his way.

“[You sure stepped it up],” Doku commented. “[Jumping into canyons feels nothing in comparison].”

“[I’ll make the entire universe protect you],” Khan whispered to Yeza in a childish tone, unbothered by Doku’s comment. “[If someone complains, Papa will get very angry at them].”

As surprising as that new version of Khan looked, Doku couldn’t help but relate to him. He also smiled, seeing him so at ease and immersed in that fatherly role, but both men soon lifted their gazes. Liiza had returned, and she wasn’t alone.

A group of timid, hesitant Niqols were behind Liiza, their white and red eyes darting between Doku, Khan, and Yeza. The latter claimed most of their attention, and Liiza promptly gave voice to those evident desires.

“[They want to see the baby],” Liiza explained.

Khan inspected the small group of Niqols before revealing a smile, standing up to reach his wife’s side. She took Yeza while giving two cups to her husband, which quickly became one since Doku also joined them.

“[This is Yeza],” Liiza explained, gently showcasing her daughter to the Niqols. “[She took my husband’s warmth, hair, and eyes, but everything else is from me].”

Khan stood at Liiza’s side, his left arm wrapped around her waist as both looked at their daughter. Doku and the Niqols followed their gazes, putting Yeza at the center of multiple sources of light.

Luckily, Yeza didn’t wake up, prompting Liiza to make a daring offer. “[You can hold her for a bit if you want].”

Some gasps resounded among the small Niqols’ group, highlighting their eagerness to accept the offer. However, a blue light fell on them, pouring cold water on that excitement and giving birth to very opposite emotions.

“[Don’t scare them],” Liiza scolded, leaning toward Khan’s smiling but chilling face to leave a kiss on his cheek.

“[I was inviting them],” Khan explained, “[Inviting them to be very, very careful].”

Liiza giggled but still offered the bundled-up Yeza to a female Niqols nearby. The latter half panicked, but Liiza didn’t give her the chance to refuse, forcing her to take the baby, holding her as if her life depended on it, which partially did.

“[She is warm, Guru],” The female Niqols gasped, genuinely surprised about that conflicting feature. Yeza looked precisely like a Niqols, but her body temperature was shocking.

“[I’m not a Guru anymore],” Liiza reminded, enjoying that welcoming reaction while sipping from her drink.

The Niqols group gathered closer to the alien woman to inspect Yeza better. Liiza kept smiling, but more Niqols left their positions, attracted by that unusual gathering to form a crowd around the baby.

The trend seemed ready to continue until every Niqols gathered around Yeza, adding cold vibes to Liiza’s pleased smile. She did her best to control herself, but eventually gave her cup to Khan, reaching for her daughter right afterward.

“[That’s enough],” Liiza awkwardly said, securing Yeza between her arms. “[I wouldn’t want her to wake up].”

Khan held back a laugh with the help of the scolding look that promptly landed on him, but another blue light suddenly joined the area, distracting the group. Doku seized a black cube from his robe, nodding to himself while listening to the communication.

“[The Elder wants to see you],” Doku revealed as he stored the cube.

Khan and Liiza exchanged a look before they both nodded at Doku. Khan also placed the two cups on the ground, performing a bow toward the Niqols’ group before looking past them, sending a glare to the still-isolated human soldiers, silently ordering them to socialize.

Afterward, the married couple approached the giant, vaguely spherical ship farther away, walking slowly and silently to make the trip as peaceful as possible for their daughter. Strangely enough, neither Khan nor Liiza felt tense about that imminent meeting since they knew exactly where they stood.

The ship’s entrance was already open, so the trio walked through the same corridor Khan had crossed earlier, eventually arriving in the cold, snowy artificial environment.

Savdat’s figure was already visible from there, standing at some distance from that exit, but another soon arrived, filling the couple’s vision with its white feathers.

Snow performed the gentlest and softest landing Khan had ever seen that Aduns doing, stopping on the dark-grey surface without making any sound or lifting any gale. The eagle-like creature even took a few short steps forward to offer its head to Liiza.

“[Hello, Snow],” Liiza chuckled, supporting Yeza with one arm while her other hand went on the Aduns’ feathers. “[Have you been a good Aduns while I was away]?”

Snow didn’t screech and let Liiza caress its head a bit longer before straightening itself. The Aduns wore a proud and dutiful stance, seemingly replying to Liiza’s question.

Khan’s jaw almost dropped, prompting him to ask a genuine question. “[Who are you? What have you done to Snow]?”

Snow pointed its three eyes at Khan, seemingly to glare at him, even sending annoyed feelings through the mental connection.

Liiza giggled, resuming walking forward, and Khan followed her. Yet, Snow’s head darted down as soon as Liiza couldn’t see it anymore, pecking Khan’s hair.

“[Traitor],” Khan whispered, ignoring those playful attacks but shaking his head as soon as Snow started following the couple, unleashing the same impeccable decor as before.

The strange group composed of an Aduns, a Niqols, a mutated human, and a baby whose species still lacked a name eventually reached the standing Elder, stopping before her. Khan performed a polite bow, half-expecting to have to take Yeza so that Liiza could do the same. Except, she didn’t even consider that.

The gesture, or lack thereof, conveyed meanings that Savdat obviously caught. Liiza wasn’t there as a Guru, Shaman, or even Niqols. She was only Khan’s wife now, so she didn’t need to abide by her species’ traditions.

“[So],” Savdat said, breaking the silence before it could become tense, “[This is my great-great-granddaughter. She is indeed a small miracle].”

Savdat’s words didn’t only involve the miracle of life. As an evolved warrior, her inspection went deep, sensing exactly how special little Yeza was on top of her interspecies nature.

For that very reason, Liiza didn’t immediately invite Savdat to hold Yeza. That option was still on the table, but the old Niqols had to stop behaving like an Elder and start acting as a great-great-grandmother for that.

“[I’ve contacted the Elders],” Savdat announced, inspecting Yeza a bit longer before looking at the couple. “[They are waiting on the footage to make a decision, but everyone sounded in agreement with your offer].”

Khan nodded, wanting to perform another traditional bow to express his gratitude, but Savdat had some bad news to share first.

“[However],” Savdat continued, “[The Niqols have yet to refill the numbers the sunlight has culled. Therefore, the Elders don’t want to see anyone join battles. This includes the Elders themselves].”
