Chapter 1314: Complications

Chapter 1314: Complications

Khan had sensed that the taller alien had switched target but didn’t initially think much of it.

The taller alien was still far away from Liiza. Khan would have had the time to kill his shorter companion and intercept him, finally moving the battle in his favor.

Moreover, the mental connection told Khan that Liiza was ready for the exchange. Despite her cold face, she brimmed with confidence, wielding a vast array of countermeasures that could allow her to deal with the incoming opponent without putting the baby at risk.

Nevertheless, that same mental connection had gone from reassuring to worrying Khan to no end after far different sensations seeped through it.

A piercing pain suddenly invaded Liiza, surprising her and destabilizing her control over her techniques. She lost her balance, falling to one knee while doing her best to endure the intense aching coming from her belly.

That was no trick. Khan sensed Liiza’s agony, surprise, and worry. The event had taken her by surprise, rearranging her priorities and shattering her confidence. She felt genuinely scared now, and her face showed it.

Visible suffering mixed with Liiza’s surprise. She forsook everything around her to focus on her belly and the life inside it, trying to understand what was happening and deal with the situation.

Still, there was little to understand or do. Liiza instantly realized a complication had happened. That was a medical emergency, and she couldn’t address it on her own while in the middle of such an intense battle.

The taller alien planned to exploit that sudden weakness, but his survival instincts screamed, halting his advance in time to witness a catastrophe unfold right before his scarlet eyes.

A red light flashed in the alien’s vision, accompanied by a humming noise. Something flew before him, altering the environment forever.

A long, deep groove had opened on the landmass below, and a similar event had afflicted the sky, albeit in a less spectacular fashion. Something had crossed the world, severing anything on its path and cutting the taller alien’s advance short.

The taller alien couldn’t help but look at the groove under him. It was strangely narrow for its size, but its edges were perfectly smooth. Whatever had cut it, it carried unfathomable sharpness.

The black evolved warrior didn’t even need to think about it. He knew that his body would have been vertically cut in half if he hadn’t halted his advance in time.

Khan knew he should have finished the shorter alien when he had the chance, but his body had moved as soon as he sensed Liiza’s pain. Seeing the other approaching opponent had also made him unleash "Cut", the Transcendent Step’s fourth advanced form, to halt his advance.

The strategy succeeded, and Khan landed at Liiza’s side while the taller alien was still busy inspecting the effects of his technique. Khan promptly crouched down to her, placing a hand on her belly while holding his breath in fear.

Liiza grunted, lifting her glowing gaze, spotting the still-open injury on Khan’s side before meeting his worried eyes.

"[It’s too soon]-" Liiza tried to say before another wave of pain ran through her, threatening to make her fall.

Khan supported Liiza, applying as little strength as possible to avoid hurting her in that delicate condition. Still, the mental connection, his senses, and the hand on her belly told him that she shouldn’t remain on the battlefield any longer.

Liiza’s belly trembled like crazy, hit from the inside by the baby’s kicks or contractions. Even she wasn’t sure of what was happening, and the uncertainty worried her to no end. Blood still flowed down her baggy trousers, and her frowning gaze returned to Khan, revealing rare vulnerability.

Khan didn’t know much about those possible complications, but that hardly mattered now. He only understood that Liiza needed his help. He had to bring her somewhere safe and put her in Zalpa’s care, but his opponents wouldn’t let them leave so easily.

The taller alien had resumed his advance, wielding a fuming, thundering black lightning bolt while approaching the couple on the ground. He didn’t hesitate to throw it when he got close enough, and the spell grew more unstable with each meter it crossed.

Khan felt the incoming obliterating presence, so he knew time was short. He was ready to sprint away with Liiza, but another painful spasm ran through her body, making her release a suppressed cry and lean on Khan.

Liiza would have already been on the ground if it weren’t for Khan. She was defenseless and powerless in that condition, seemingly unable to endure any sudden acceleration or violent impact.

Khan hesitated for less than a second before looking at the incoming black lightning bolt, opening his mouth while thunderous noises resounded in his throat.

A blinding light shone from the bottom of Khan’s throat before a purple-red beam shot out of it, carrying destructive sparks over its unstable surface. The spell met the black lightning bolt, and an explosion unfolded, but the danger wasn’t over.

The purple-red explosion was short-lived. A circular cavity appeared at its center, and the black lightning bolt crossed it, revealing its still-intact state. It looked ready to blow up, and Khan even started to experience its obliterating effects, but that didn’t stun him.

Khan quickly put Liiza down, disappearing from his position to appear before the incoming lightning bolt. His figure became dark as he crossed his arms before his face and slammed head-first into the black, fuming spell.

Black sparks flew everywhere. A dark, glowing storm expanded in mid-air while a fuming figure shot toward the ground. Khan slammed on the white landmass, his body bouncing over the ice before sliding to a stop.

The taller alien crossed the black storm and lifted his arms. The fuming sparks in the area came alive, quickly condensing to create a barrage of lightning bolts, replicating what Khan had summoned before.

Meanwhile, the shorter alien joined the scene, flying at his companion’s side while thick smoke came from his fingers. He had completely healed, and his scarlet eyes went on Liiza, who was still where Khan had left her, curled in pain on the white ice.

Then, the taller alien sent the lightning bolts at Khan, while the shorter alien swung his fuming hands at Liiza, releasing slash-like attacks.
