Chapter 1138 Congratulations
Khan almost couldn't believe it. He still recalled his first meeting with George during the Kred's rebellion. Both of them had been nothing more than kids slightly less clueless than their peers, but the tragic experience had created an unshakable bond.
Due to a twist of fate, be it lucky or unlucky, Khan and George reunited on Nitis, facing another tragedy together but also maturing through it. The Niqols had fixed their traumas, saving them from the dark paths the Kred had pushed them onto.
After some time, Khan and George had reunited in the Harbor. The latter had done it on purpose so that Khan could have a real friend inside that unfriendly environment, and his decision worked perfectly for both of them.
The more Khan reviewed his memories, the more he found George's transformation magical. The man talked big and played around a lot, but he was the best when things got serious, whether in battle or when someone stirred his feelings.
George's relationship with Anita had almost happened by chance. He definitely didn't plan it and had often shared those thoughts with Khan. Yet, as unlikely as it sounded, George had stuck to it, developing it to what it was now.
The boy with a sharp battle sense and carefree personality had become a man, ultimately turning into a father. Khan also knew George was worthy of that terrifying but incredibly fulfilling role, and he couldn't help but be overwhelmed by pure, genuine happiness at the event.
'For all your teasing,' Khan thought, unable to suppress his idiotic grin. 'You ended up marrying and making a family before me. You'll never win another argument with me again.'
Other than immense happiness, Khan also felt glad his paranoia had failed for once. Khan didn't curse George for some mystical reasons. Everything had gone well during one of the most important moments in his life, and Khan almost dared to hope the universe wasn't as unfair as he initially believed.
Of course, the topic tried to add fuel to dark thoughts. As happy as Khan was for George, his achievements reflected what he had lost and had given up. Bret probably wouldn't like what Khan was doing and how he was doing it, but he wasn't there to scold him anymore. No one was.
Khan pushed aside those dark thoughts and straightened his back, sitting on the metal floor while retrieving the phone. That day couldn't be about depression. It was a time for celebrations, which Khan would mostly avoid.
'How did you convince Anita to name him after your father?' Khan replied to the picture. 'I thought she kept you on a short leash.'
A message reached Khan's phone almost instantly, and he couldn't help but laugh again when reading it. 'Anita wanted to repay my father for all the support he gave us. She also needed to draw a clear line with her family.'
Anita didn't have a great relationship with her mother, and her family wasn't exactly ecstatic about her union. The Wildon family stood above the Ildoo's in terms of relevance, influence, and wealth. In many ways, George barely made the cut thanks to Khan.
Still, much had changed since the Harbor. Khan's position had only improved, and all his allies benefited from it. Everyone knew George was his closest friend, so his political value had skyrocketed, quieting any complaint about his unsuitable family.
Actually, due to that closeness and various deals, the Ildoo family was bound to see a period of unending and stable growth. In a few decades, it might surpass the Wildon family and reach heights only the Solodrey or Cobsend had touched.
Moreover, the connection to Khan had turned George into the undisputed runner-up for the position of Patriarch. At some point, he would be in charge of one of the mightiest forces in the Global Army, and Anita wanted to tell the world that she sided with him.
'How did your father take it?' Khan asked.
'I've never seen the old man smile so much,' George responded. 'I swear, it's scary.'
Khan shook his head, but his idiotic grin never faded. Things would only improve for George, Anita, and their son. Their future would be bright. Khan just had to make sure they had one.
'Go back to your wife and son,' Khan wrote. 'I can't be your top priority anymore, so make sure to remember that.'
'I happen to be busy now,' George replied. 'You know, being a father and all. I'll let you off the hook, but don't think for a second that I'll stop calling you. You won't get rid of me that easily.'
'Being a father is already rubbing you off,' Khan wrote. 'Now go be a good husband. It's already hard writing this without laughing myself to tears.'
'Joke all you want,' George responded. 'Remember that you are part of this family, Mister Godfather.'
'Ah, I almost forgot,' Khan typed. 'Congratulations, George.'
'Anita did all the work,' George wrote back. 'I just put my good looks into it.'
'Share my congratulations with her, too,' Khan said. 'Stop looking at your phone now. You have far better stuff to do.'
Khan chuckled again before putting down his phone. He had already stolen George from that happy moment too long, and, as much as the latter said otherwise, he didn't belong inside it. Khan's place was elsewhere, doing something only he could accomplish.
The anxious eating and drinking while waiting for the good news didn't leave Khan in the greatest state. He couldn't remember the last time he had gotten drunk or tipsy, and his current condition wasn't anywhere close to that. However, his training was risky already, and he didn't want to add avoidable variables.
Nevertheless, the eating part provided some benefits. Khan had started starving himself during his mental training to reinforce his connection to his sense of self, but that wave of nutrients did wonders for his worsened condition.
A single day of eating shouldn't normally be enough to recover from weeks of abuse, but Khan felt revitalized. Much had to do with the happy news, but something involved his body and its new functions.
Khan couldn't put his finger on it but felt as if he could eat ten more full courses. His stomach had always been profound, but even he had limits, especially after filling himself with all sorts of meals.
Yet, it seemed Khan had already digested and absorbed the previous nutrients, making room for more. His body told him his needs weren't fulfilled, and he didn't have anything better to do at the moment.
'Now that I think about it,' Khan realized, 'I never had a fulfilling meal after the transformation.'
Khan had always been innately resilient, and his transformations had enhanced that trait. However, a body was an organic machine that needed nutrients to operate at full power, and Khan had never once refilled its tank.
'It's worth a try,' Khan concluded, summoning the flat's menus to place a series of orders. He couldn't resume training anyway, so that moment was the perfect chance to test some of his new limits.
