Chapter 62: The Sect Leader Returns
The arrival of the Flame Dragon Carp brought new warmth to Lin Jing’s residence.
Where there had once been only him and the Pine Leaf Mouse, now there was a third occupant.
Unfortunately, the Mechanical Bamboo Turtle, lacking intelligence, didn’t add much to the lively atmosphere. Still, it didn’t matter—the carp and the turtle shared the same unthinking demeanor, so they got along just fine.
For the next few days, Lin Jing remained indoors, resting in bed. He was utterly exhausted, unsure if it was due to overusing his illusionary techniques or the aftereffects of tapping into the Ice Soul Gu's power. His face had grown noticeably haggard.
Though Lin Jing was frail, the Pine Leaf Mouse was unusually energetic. Inside its Suspended Gourd, it undertook massive construction projects, planting trees and cultivating crops.
The gourd soon teemed with life: spiritual rice, spiritual beans, spiritual bamboo, and even the few chili seeds the mouse had secretly hidden were now flourishing. In just a few days, these spirit plants had fully matured.
Peering into the gourd, Lin Jing saw the Pine Leaf Mouse draped in a Daoist robe, its vibrant emerald qi radiating outward. With a wave of its paws, the wind howled, and golden stalks of spirit rice shot up, growing as if on steroids.
“The Everlasting Emperor's Longevity Art suits it perfectly,” Lin Jing muttered.
The mouse had been cultivating the Everlasting Emperor's Longevity Art over the past few days, transforming its ordinary wood-element spiritual energy into Emperor Qi, which excelled in manipulating plants. Whether accelerating the growth of spirit plants or controlling the red leaves, this cultivation technique had proven invaluable. For a spirit beast, such a compatible technique was a rare treasure. To the Pine Leaf Mouse, this opportunity was akin to a full-scale bloodline evolution. With its Glazed Immortal Eyes complementing its cultivation, the mouse could become a resource-hoarding powerhouse. Even without a king-level bloodline, given enough time, it might someday challenge king-level beast cubs.
Once Lin Jing recovered, he stepped out of his cave dwelling. Outside, the sky was a mosaic of dazzling colors, the warm sunlight spilling gently over Danxia Peak.
He chose not to disturb the Pine Leaf Mouse, busy with its hoarding spree, and instead focused on finding more suitable food for the Dragon Carp. Feeding it spiritual rice for days had filled the air with the tantalizing aroma of fish and rice porridge. He feared his cave might soon be mistaken for a farmstead.
The Pine Leaf Mouse was content with spiritual rice, but the Dragon Carp needed a diet of small shrimp or insects.
In the end, Lin Jing spent a fortune at Nine Dragons Peak to procure a bag of shrimp raised in spiritual springs, said to be highly nutritious.
“Hurry up and eat~” he called, tossing the shrimp into the pond he had dug in his cave. The fish tank had become too cramped for the carp’s daily activities, and the pond allowed it more freedom to move. Unless traveling, the tank would remain unused.
As Lin Jing fed the carp, he began its "early education."
“Don’t follow the Pine Leaf Mouse’s example. It refuses to even transform into a weapon for me to use as a Beast Tamer.”
“I’ll take good care of you. Once you transform into a dragon, how about I use Beast-Weaponization to turn you into a spear?”
He imagined himself donning silver armor, wielding a spear with the power of a dragon.
But as the fantasy played out, the spear morphed into a sniper rifle. Lin Jing shook his head furiously.
Determined to focus, Lin Jing retreated to his alchemy room to practice.
The Dragon Carp, seemingly incapable of providing Beast Flame anytime soon, left him reliant on Earth Flame for refining pills. While Earth Flame produced lower-quality pills with reduced success rates, it was excellent for honing his fire control techniques.
With ample spirit plants cultivated by the Pine Leaf Mouse, Lin Jing had a steady supply of materials for crafting Replenishing Pills and Misdirection Pills. The sheer volume of practice allowed him to sharpen his skills significantly.
A month passed in the blink of an eye.
During this time, the cultivation levels of Lin Jing, the Pine Leaf Mouse, and the Dragon Carp remained stagnant. However, their foundational strength grew considerably.
The Pine Leaf Mouse hoarded supplies with zeal, while Lin Jing amassed a sizable stockpile of Misdirection Pills through diligent alchemy practice.
By now, his success rate for crafting Replenishing Pills and Misdirection Pills exceeded 90%. This was impressive for someone at Qi Refining Stage Four, using only Earth Flame and basic alchemical tools. With better equipment, he might achieve 100% success.
Lin Jing also dabbled in mechanized techniques and alchemy, expanding his skill set further. Yet, he still had much to accomplish. Most pressing was mastering the Sacred Wood Seal, taught to him by Shen Song.
The seal required wood-element power to function, something Lin Jing lacked. Thus, he and the Pine Leaf Mouse would need to practice together, their energies combining to cast it. This training could no longer be delayed, as it directly affected his ability to harness the Ice Soul Gu's power.
Closing the alchemy room, Lin Jing called out to the Pine Leaf Mouse within the Suspended Gourd, “It’s been a month. Let’s practice the sealing technique together.”
“Once we’ve made progress, you can focus on advancing your cultivation, and I’ll work on mine.”
He produced a bag of shrimp, the next target for their sealing experiments.
Meanwhile, far away, a flock of celestial cranes descended upon the Beast Taming Sect’s protective formation, carrying passengers into the sect.
At the forefront sat a weathered man, flanked by young disciples—men, women, and others of androgynous appearance—all exuding extraordinary auras. Surrounding them were fearsome Demonic Kings, their menacing expressions belying their role as protectors.
“The Sect Leader and the Ancestors have returned!”
Many elders rushed out to greet them, puzzled by the early return of the sect leader and his party, who had gone out to train the sect’s true disciples. Weren’t they supposed to proceed directly to the Grand Celestial Gathering after the training?
Within the grand hall atop the Beast Taming Sect’s peak, the Fifth Sect Leader, Xu Xiaoyao, sat at the head of the assembly.
Seated on either side of him were Golden Core elders. To everyone’s surprise, rarely-seen Nascent Soul-level Demonic King ancestors had also arrived, either in person or via avatars.
Elder Mo, eager to share his discovery of Lin Jing, could barely contain himself. To him, Lin Jing was a prodigy who could ensure the sect’s prosperity for another ten millennia. With such a talent, the current imbalance—where six Demonic Kings held greater power than the sect leader—might finally be addressed.
However, Xu Xiaoyao’s next words left the assembly in shock.
“Everyone, our Beast Taming Sect… may need to disband temporarily. Soon, the sect’s spiritual veins will be sealed.”
“The Sect Regulatory Office has issued a decree. Our sect's demonic fortune has surpassed its human fortune, and the current balance no longer aligns with the nation's destiny. They have ordered us to close the sect for a hundred years. If we cannot rectify the situation within that time… the Beast Taming Sect may cease to exist.”
