Chapter 60: Choosing a Fire Beast

Chapter 60: Choosing a Fire Beast

When Lin Jing woke again, Elder Yu, Elder Mo, and several others had come to visit.

During his rest, the story of the events in Snow Moon City had spread, thanks to the incessant embellishments of the Pine Leaf Mouse. It depicted itself heroically battling the Parasitic Gu Spider, supposedly at the cost of countless Spiritual Beans, and now it was requesting the sect to replenish its “resources.”

Elder Mo casually approved the request, more focused on the larger issue. No one had anticipated that the mission in Snow Moon City would involve the Lotus Pavilion and the Gu God Cult’s Rare Gu. Even more surprising was how, in just a few days, an innocent Pine Leaf Mouse had grown so cunning.

“But hosting a Gu worm inside your body… Is that really safe? Junior Brother, just don’t end up turning into a demon cultivator for its sake,” Senior Brother Ouyang warned. Gu worms were notoriously difficult to manage, and the temptation to resort to questionable methods to sustain them often led cultivators astray.

“If you can’t handle it, don’t force yourself. Let it drain my strength instead; I’ll bear the burden for you!” Ouyang offered earnestly.

“A Rare Gu like this… it’d be a shame not to keep it,” Elder Mo remarked. “Who says Gu worms can’t be beasts? Why can’t they be tamed? If Senior Shen Song says it’s fine and the Sword Immortal of Lingyue didn’t object, then there’s no issue.”

“Indeed,” Elder Yu chimed in. “Plus, controlling puppets and mechanisms often uses Qi threads. With the Ice Soul Gu’s silk, his mastery of mechanism techniques and control over mechanized beasts will only improve!” His mind was clearly preoccupied with thoughts of mechanism art.

Lin Jing’s lips twitched. Perhaps he could reconsider planting the black chili peppers Elder Black Bear had demanded he destroy. As Shen Song had said, “Debts don’t burden the debtor.” Now that he was a vessel for Gu worms, what harm could a few fiery experiments bring?

“Don’t worry about me. If I ever find it beyond my control, I’ll stop,” Lin Jing assured them. “But Senior Shen Song mentioned that to perfectly manage the Ice Soul Gu, it would be best to contract a fire beast after reaching the Foundation Establishment Stage, to balance its power. Does the sect have suitable fire beasts?”

“A fire beast would be perfect,” Elder Black Bear suddenly interjected from the doorway. “With one, you’d even have help refining pills!”

His underlying meaning was clear: Lin Jing might not need the Beast Flame he had previously been promised. Elder Black Bear chuckled slyly.

Even the Pine Leaf Mouse perked up. A fire beast would spare it from being forced to eat those dreaded chili peppers.

“Fire beasts…” Elder Yu pondered. “The Fire Spirit Sparrow won’t work. It’s only of Spirit-level bloodline, and not even particularly strong within that rank. It’s fine as a basic companion beast, but to balance the innate Gu King, the Ice Soul Gu? Impossible.”

“But does our Beast Taming Sect even have any fire beasts with Demonic King-level bloodlines?” Ouyang wondered aloud. “Fire beasts with King-level bloodlines are rare throughout the Great Wasteland Domain.”

“We don’t necessarily need a King-level bloodline,” Elder Mo said. “The key is finding a beast with sufficiently powerful bloodline strength to suppress the Gu King.”

“Ordinary beasts won’t do,” Elder Yu added. “We need something from the dragon lineage!”

Dragon lineage! Both Elder Yu and Ouyang nodded in agreement. In ancient times, before the decline of the demonic races, dragons were the pinnacle of the demon hierarchy. Their bloodline was unmatched in power, making them ideal for suppressing Gu worms.

“So, we just need a beast with fire attributes and dragon blood,” Elder Mo concluded. “King-level bloodlines aren’t strictly necessary because… don’t forget, if he studies at the Hidden Dragon Academy, he can learn the Hidden Dragon Secret Art. As Senior Cao said, it’s the pinnacle method for cultivating dragon-blooded beasts.”

“With the Hidden Dragon Secret Art, a fire beast with dragon blood can evolve into one with King-level bloodlines!” Elder Yu exclaimed, finally remembering the potential. “As long as the beast has fire and dragon attributes, the rest can be developed!”

Lin Jing nodded. “I remember the most common dragon-blooded beast on Nine Dragons Peak is the Dragonblood Carp, but that’s a water-type spirit beast.”

The Dragonblood Carp wasn’t one of the sect’s five foundational spirit beasts. Its combat capabilities were minimal during the Qi Refining Stage, requiring aquatic environments to survive. Unlike other beasts like the Rain Frog, it couldn’t function well on land.

Only when a Dragonblood Carp ascended the Nine Dragons Waterfall, transforming into a Fish Dragon, would it become a coveted creature, even among Foundation Establishment disciples. However, such a transformation was exceedingly rare, with no recent successes in the sect’s history.

“Don’t worry,” Elder Mo reassured him. “There are plenty of dragon-blooded beasts on Nine Dragons Peak. That’s the dominance of dragon bloodlines for you.”

“In the ancient demon era, the dragon race thrived. Their powerful bloodline allowed them to propagate freely across species, leading to an abundance of dragon-blooded beasts on the Tianyuan Continent.”

“What other sects might consider rare, we don’t lack in the Beast Taming Sect!”

“Moreover, our Fourth Sect Master contributed greatly to the diversity of our companion beasts. Let me consult Elder Jiang and see what’s available!” Elder Mo promised, leaving swiftly.

The Fourth Sect Master, though not as renowned as the Second Sect Master, who reformed the sect, nor the Third Sect Master, who developed numerous secret techniques, had nonetheless left an indelible mark.

He had encouraged interbreeding among spirit and demon beasts, utilizing pills to enhance offspring bloodlines. His efforts resulted in many extraordinary companion beasts, albeit with some less successful outcomes. Overall, his contributions were deemed invaluable. The thriving dragon-blood beast population on Nine Dragons Peak was a testament to his legacy.

Elder Mo didn’t keep Lin Jing waiting long, soon returning with a list of three dragon-blooded fire beasts:

  1. Foundation Establishment Early Stage: Heavenfeather Crane.

A mutated member of the crane family with Firefeather Dragon bloodline, its feathers could transform into white dragon flames. Favored by the sect leader’s wife, it was highly sought after by disciples.

  1. Foundation Establishment Mid Stage: Dragon Lion.

A wild fire lion mutated after consuming a dragon-blooded spirit plant. Now tamed, it serves as an outer sect guest elder, awaiting the right master.

  1. Qi Refining Stage Nine: Flaming Arm Monkey.

A regression of the Battle Ape lineage, its ancestor was the sect’s late demonic king, the Redscale Ape Monkey, companion beast of the Fourth Sect Master. It possesses Fire-scaled Dragon bloodline.

Elder Mo handed the list to Lin Jing with a smile. “Take your pick!”
