Vol 2 Chapter 87: Battling Core Formation
The swarm of blood mosquitoes launched relentless suicidal attacks, leaving the two Core Formation cultivators, one a leader from the Yin Corpse Sect and the other a branch head of the Demon-Slaying Bureau, in utter disarray. Neither had ever encountered such an eerie blood-path technique that mimicked the characteristics of the Cloud Sea Mosquito Beast.
Despite their Core Formation cultivation, the sheer number of blood beasts, attacking without regard for life, left them unnerved. After eliminating hundreds, the relentless assault made them realize this was a battle they couldn’t afford to prolong.
Initially, seeing Lin Jing as a mere Qi Refinement cultivator, the pair had struck with confidence. However, they soon discovered this was no ordinary Qi Refinement practitioner. Not only did he harbor a powerful Gu insect, but he also had a Foundation Establishment-level pet beast proficient in spatial arts!
Realizing that Lin Jing wasn’t easily subdued, the two began to negotiate.
“Fellow Daoist, we have no grudge with you. Extermination will bring you no benefit. If you force us to the brink, we’ll shatter our cores and unleash our divine abilities. Neither of us will walk away alive!”
Surrounded by the blood mosquito army, the two Core Formation cultivators exuded a menacing aura as the power of their cores surged.
“If your goal is the Twin Physiques, you can have them. But if you push us further, no one will come out unscathed.”
Standing protectively before the twins, Lin Jing regarded the trapped cultivators above. He didn’t think they were bluffing.
Having witnessed the devastating power of the Crimson Armored Guard’s Core Formation divine ability earlier, Lin Jing knew that even with the Ice Soul Gu’s fusion, he couldn’t fully withstand such an attack.Core Formation divine abilities were a double-edged sword. Using them inflicted wear on the core, which could take decades of secluded cultivation and rare healing treasures to repair. Shattering the core entirely would drop a Core Formation cultivator to the Foundation Establishment stage, a state from which most never recovered.
The two cultivators’ threat to unleash their most destructive divine abilities, even at the cost of shattering their cores, was a clear message: Lin Jing should back down to avoid mutual destruction.
“Full-powered divine abilities, huh...” Lin Jing’s lips curled into a faint smile as he weighed the threat.
For Core Formation cultivators, divine abilities were their ultimate trump card, rarely used in battles unless the disparity in power was immense. That two Core Formation cultivators were threatening a Qi Refinement-stage opponent with such measures was almost unheard of.
Lin Jing responded with actions instead of words, making it clear he was unafraid. The Pine Leaf Mouse continued directing the blood mosquito swarm, while Lin Jing raised his right hand, launching spider silk toward the pair.
“Watch out! Those threads are laced with terrifying Gu poison. It almost controlled me. Even using my divine ability, I could barely suppress it. Don’t let it touch you!” the Yin Corpse Sect leader shouted, wary that the Crimson Armored Guard might become Lin Jing’s puppet and turn against him.
“Let me tell you something,” Lin Jing said, his fingers deftly manipulating the white threads. “Even if you suppress the Gu poison now, it’s only temporary. Without me, there’s no cure. The poison will spread until it freezes your soul. Do you still want me gone?”
The Yin Corpse Sect leader’s expression faltered as Lin Jing’s words struck home. This Gu insect was unlike anything he had seen. It had not only usurped control of his refined corpses but also infiltrated him through their spiritual connection.
“Since you insist on courting death, don’t blame fate,” he snarled.
The sect leader stopped evading and reached for the incoming spider silk. As his body exhibited more corpse-like features, he activated a secret art: Corpse Transformation. This technique temporarily converted his physique into that of a corpse puppet, enhancing his resistance to negative effects and mitigating the Gu poison’s influence.
Even so, the transformation pushed his body to its limits, cracks appearing across his form as his corpse-like state deepened. Seizing the spider silk, he planned to capture Lin Jing and force a cure for the poison.
However, before he could act, a chilling gust swept through the battlefield. A spatial ripple appeared, and Lin Jing, along with the Pine Leaf Mouse and the Twin Physiques, vanished.
The sect leader froze, scanning the area with his spiritual sense, only to find no trace of Lin Jing or the twins. The swarm of blood mosquitoes, now without the Pine Leaf Mouse’s guidance, continued their frenzied attacks, driven solely by instinct.
High above, concealed by an illusion, Lin Jing observed the scene below.
“You’re pretty quick on your feet, kid,” remarked the Divine Pine, watching the scattered red leaves. It was clear that Lin Jing’s strategy was to avoid the divine abilities entirely. Though powerful, a divine ability was useless if it couldn’t hit its target.
The two Core Formation cultivators had issued hollow threats. Without a guaranteed strike, activating their divine abilities would be pointless.
Furthermore, Lin Jing had cleverly used the Gu poison as a counterthreat, forcing the Yin Corpse Sect leader into a corner. To survive, the sect leader now had no choice but to capture Lin Jing alive.
The sect leader’s Core Formation divine ability, when unleashed, had amplified his strength twofold. While Lin Jing couldn’t match him in direct combat, his spatial arts and illusionary tactics left the leader struggling.
“Drawing out just one of their divine abilities is enough,” Lin Jing murmured as he watched below.
Enraged by Lin Jing’s disappearance, the Yin Corpse Sect leader annihilated countless blood mosquitoes with a sweep of his corpse banner. His gaze shifted to the Crimson Armored Guard, and with a roar, his Five-Element Corpses surrounded the guard. In a flash, his claw pierced the guard’s chest.
