Chapter 2424: Dowry

“What do you want… It’s still too early for you to wake me up… Let me sleep for a while more!” Qiao Mei said aggrievedly.

“If you continue sleeping! The sky is going to collapse! Get up now!” Qian’e said.

“What? What happened?” Qiao Mei asked as she forced herself to stay awake.

Qian’e took out two red notebooks from her bag and said, “Look at these. Can you recognize them?”

Qiao Mei waved her hand impatiently and said, “What, it’s just a marriage certificate. What’s so special about it…”

Less than five seconds after she lay down on the bed, she bounced back up and snatched the marriage certificates from Qian’e to take a closer look. When she got married, it was the community office which issued a certificate with a stamp on it. That was considered a notarized marriage. In recent years, there had been reforms in the process and marriage registrations were handled by the Civil Affairs Bureau. As part of the process, the bureau would issue a pair of red notebooks with the names and photos of the couple inside. The notebooks looked really nice and festive!

Qiao Mei had been thinking about asking Xia Zhe to go and exchange their marriage certificate for a pair of red notebooks!

“How can the two of you act so fast!” Qiao Mei said in surprise.

“We are the first couple to register our marriage today!” Qian’e said with a blissful expression.

“Oh my, you’re really different now. After getting married, you seem to have become a different person!” Qiao Mei teased.

“What are you talking about! As if you’re the only one who’s allowed to show off your love life and I’m not allowed to do it!” Qian’e said.

Qiao Mei took a peep outside. After confirming that there was no one there, she held Qian’e by the hand and said, “Do you know anything about Da Zhuang’s family? And about their relatives.”

“He told me a bit. Yao Nian also sent me information about Da Zhuang’s family some time ago, but there will definitely be some details that only the family members know about. How would I be able to know everything,” Qian’e said.

“As far as I know, Da Zhuang lent his eldest brother about 1,000 dollars to build a house. It’s been two years and there’s no sign of him returning the money. You can’t let Da Zhuang get away with not getting you anything just because you already have everything. You should maintain all the traditional practices, especially the Four Big Things!” Qiao Mei reminded her.

“I know! I know all these! Auntie Xu Lan and Godmother have both reminded me about all these things and I remember everything. Da Zhuang has already prepared all the various items and he has placed them in my house. He has also bought a matrimonial house, but as you know, I’m used to living in the house nearby and I don’t want to move,” Qian’e said.

“As long as you know what you’re doing,” Qiao Mei said.

“I know that you care a lot for me. No matter how close we are, it’s still a risk to be so blunt but you took the risk anyway. Don’t worry, I won’t be that stupid again,” Qian’e said.

The two of them looked at each other and smiled. That past scene of the two of them confronting each other fiercely was still vivid in their minds. They did not expect time to have flown by so quickly. Back then, they would never have expected that the two of them would be able to coexist peacefully.

“What about the wedding ceremony? Do you want me to take charge?” Qiao Mei asked.

“I don’t plan to hold one in the capital. Is there still anyone in the capital who doesn’t know about my past experiences? I don’t want to be too ostentatious. Da Zhuang wants to do one in his hometown,” Qian’e said.

“That’s fine too. Then how many people do you need from here? You need to have a group of your own people there,” Qiao Mei said.

“You know me best. I’m here to talk to you about this,” Qian’e said.

No matter what, they must send at least 20 people to attend the ceremony. This way, the Gao family would know that even if Qian’e was estranged from her maternal family and even if her reputation was not very good, there were still people who doted on her!

“Wait for me here,” Qiao Mei said.

Qiao Mei quickly got out of bed and went into the wardrobe next door. She gently fiddled with the mirror on the dressing table and suddenly, the wall on her left side moved a little. This was the secret room that Qiao Mei had gotten someone to custom-make for her to store some of her valuables.

She used all her strength to carry out a box. The wooden box was golden in colour and looked expensive. In fact, it looked even more dazzling under the sunlight.

“I’m ready! Come here and take a look!” Qiao Mei shouted towards her bedroom as she opened the box.

Qian’e looked at Qiao Mei in shock. The box was made of top-notch golden cedar wood and it was something priceless! At that time, Qiao Mei had only managed to get her hand on four of these boxes.

“What are you doing?” Qian’e asked.

“This is the dowry which I prepared for you. I thought that it would be a long time before I needed to bring it out, but I didn’t expect time to pass so quickly. I made two wedding dresses for you, both embroidered with golden thread. Inside the box, you’ll also find the wedding shoes which my mother made for you! There are also four sets of jewelry, all top-notch imperial green jade. These are all for you,” Qiao Mei said as she stroked the clothes in the box.

Qian’e started to cry and the tears streamed down her face. She did not know that Qiao Mei had quietly done so many things for her. This was something that a mother would do for her daughter. She had already come to terms that it was something she would not experience, but she did not expect Qiao Mei to have gotten everything ready for her.

“Why are you crying! This is a happy occasion! You’re not allowed to cry!” Qiao Mei said.
