After Divorce, I Can Hear the Future

Chapter 69: A Healthy Perspective on Relationships

Chapter 69: A Healthy Perspective on Relationships

"Let go!"

Su Wanyu’s cheeks flushed as she struggled to free her hand, but Lu Liang held on firmly.

"Once I’ve held your hand, how could I let go so easily?"

Lu Liang smiled, and as if performing a magic trick, he pulled out a delicate four-leaf clover bracelet from his pocket.

In a gentle voice, he explained, "A four-leaf clover is a rare mutation of the common three-leaf clover. Out of 100,000 clovers, only one has four leaves, making it a symbol of luck. Meeting you has been the greatest fortune of my life. Will you be my girlfriend?"

“Ah...”

Su Wanyu froze on the spot. Though she indeed had feelings for Lu Liang and had spent over fifty hours with him, this was only their first date. Wasn’t it too soon to confirm their relationship? She wasn’t ready for such a step.

"Too fast?" Lu Liang asked, sensing her hesitation.

She nodded quickly, her face reddening even more as her limbs stiffened. Her words tumbled out nervously, "Um... how about... giving me... a little more time?"

"So, you don’t like me? You’re rejecting me?"

Lu Liang sighed, his face clouded with disappointment.

"I... I don’t dislike you, and I’m not rejecting you!"

Flustered, Su Wanyu nearly burst into tears, stomping her foot in frustration—only to misstep and twist her ankle painfully. She winced, sucking in a sharp breath.

"This feels like such a soap opera moment—blind and now limping. I think I’ve seen this somewhere before," Lu Liang muttered in disbelief, then chuckled. "We’d better not find out there’s something worse when we get to the hospital."

“You… you’re such a jerk!”

Tears welled up in Su Wanyu’s eyes as she glared at him. She’d watched enough Korean dramas to guess what he might say next, but no clever retort came to mind. When she finally blurted something out, it only made her angrier, and she started crying in earnest.

Attempting to stand, she immediately felt a sharp, bone-deep pain in her right foot and clutched Lu Liang’s arm for support.

"Don’t move. Let me take a look."

Lu Liang’s playful demeanor vanished as he crouched down beside her, using his phone’s flashlight to inspect her injury. He gently removed her flat shoe and half of her sock, revealing her pale ankle swelling visibly, reddened within seconds.

Suddenly, a soft sniffle caught his attention. A tear rolled off Su Wanyu’s lashes, landing on the back of his hand. Her nose was red, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears, and her lashes glistened with tiny droplets.

Without a word, she wiped her tears, silent but clearly feeling wronged, like a child enduring a grievance alone.

Lu Liang frowned, lifting her arms onto his shoulders. Without waiting for her approval, he scooped her onto his back.

Explanations felt pointless at the moment—what mattered was getting her to the hospital and giving her time to calm down.

Su Wanyu resisted initially, squirming and protesting louder than a pig at slaughter. But Lu Liang’s determination was unyielding.

After walking a long stretch, she finally quieted down, her arms subconsciously wrapping around his neck and her face resting against his shoulder, tears still brimming in her eyes.

She wasn’t crying from pain—it was the sting of humiliation.

"Lu Liang, you’re such a jerk."

She had imagined her first date with someone she liked would be perfect: a joyful outing, a happy return home, and even a moment of shyness under the covers as she recalled the evening.

Instead, like a movie line goes: she guessed the beginning but not the end.

Lu Liang smirked faintly but said nothing. At times like this, letting her vent was better than making excuses—overexplaining would only make things worse.

He had initially intended to move quickly, solidify their relationship, and leave the deeper emotional connections for later. But life was full of surprises, and things had spiraled into this unexpected situation.

---

They reached the Haidilao parking lot, where Lu Liang drove her to the hospital.

Fortunately, the injury was a mild sprain. After a bit of bone-setting and bandaging, a week of rest would suffice for recovery.

While taking care of the paperwork, Lu Liang noticed the bracelet he had given her now adorned her wrist.

A subtle smile curved his lips. "How about we do a full-body checkup too?"

This earned him a fierce glare from Su Wanyu. "If you’re so eager, why don’t you do it yourself?"

After settling the bill and buying her a crutch for support, Lu Liang asked, feigning ignorance, "That bracelet looks nice. Did your boyfriend give it to you?"

"Some jerk gave it to me," she retorted with a huff, her resentment still evident.

Lu Liang laughed. "That jerk also wants to know where you live so he can take you home."

"Tell that jerk to grab my glasses from the office first, then take me to Guangzhong Fifth Village."

"Can’t you stay in a dorm while prepping for your exams?"

"Of course not."

Lu Liang hadn’t known—he’d assumed she lived on campus since she’d been preparing for her exams since early in the year.

Instead of going back to the office, he found an optician’s shop nearby. "The building’s locked at this hour. Let’s just get a new pair here."

The locked building wasn’t really an issue—he could make a call to have someone open it. He simply didn’t want her wearing those old glasses, which he thought looked terrible.

He picked a rimless frame, one that perfectly complemented her quiet elegance.

The transformation was immediate. Her appearance, already a solid 9, rose to a stunning 9.5. The missing half-point came only from her youth, as she lacked the unique charm of a mature woman.

Su Wanyu frowned at the price tag. "I have spares at home. There’s no need to buy new ones."

The pair cost ¥3,800. The glasses she ordered online were barely ¥100.

Lu Liang smiled and instructed the shopkeeper to proceed. "Consider it compensation from that jerk."

"No."

Su Wanyu’s tone was firm. She knew he was wealthy, but her inner compass dictated which gifts were appropriate to accept.

She had taken the bracelet because he had said it was a token of his feelings for her. Even then, she was already planning to return the favor with a gift of similar value.

Love, in her mind, was a mutual journey—not a one-sided performance. Constant taking didn’t qualify as love.

Lu Liang studied her for a long time, his gaze clear and reflective. He’d seen too many unhealthy or transactional relationships, and her wholesome perspective on love made him question if such a thing truly existed.

Was she genuine?

He decided to believe her, for now.

As long as he stayed cautious and avoided hasty conclusions, he figured he wouldn’t lose out.

Lu Liang smiled and told the shopkeeper, "Let’s pick a different pair instead."

The shopkeeper was stunned, his disappointment clear. "Are you sure? I can offer a 10% discount."

"No need."

Su Wanyu broke into a radiant smile, her eyes glowing with joy. "Sorry for the trouble, Boss. Let me pick again."

Her happiness stemmed not from winning the argument but from Lu Liang considering her perspective.

She was, after all, just a newly graduated student from an ordinary family. Spending thousands on glasses seemed unnecessary when a few hundred would suffice.

After some careful selection, she chose a pair similar in style to the ¥3,800 ones.

With the simpler material, her face still glowed just as brightly. The key, after all, was the person wearing them.

"Boss, I’ll take these," she said, beaming as she happily paid for the new glasses herself.
